I was changing spark plugs today and noticed oil in spark plug wells for cylinders 2 and 6. Does that mean that I have worn piston rings or is it just the valve cover? The other spark plugs were dry.

Good chance it's just the valvecover gasket. Replace it and tourque it down properly; you'll know if you have a problem after a while.

what's the proper pattern for replacing bolts on the valve cover. I think that there is a certain way to do it

While that's true of the cylinder head itself, I don't believe that's the case with the valve. cover.
I checked the Bentley and it doesn't say anything, either.

a valve cover gasket set will be 30 bucks. and you will also need new valve cover washers (15 total) at about 1.25 each.
