328i shuts off while driving.Please help!!!!!

Iam having a huge problem and am at my wits end.About a month back my 328i(1998) started slowing down inexplicably during the middle of a highway drive.The RPM would go down to zero and the car would start losing power.Then after about 5 seconds the car would get a sudden burst of accelation and things wil be normal

I took it to the dealer and they couldnt replicate the problem and they were not about to find any engine codes indicating anythign was wrong.I was told it was maybe something to do with the weather on that day.

About 2 weeks back things started to get worse while the car would grind to a stop while driving(its damn scary when driving at 65 mph).It would start right back up once I turned the key and restarted it.This was stil erratic and I took it to another mech who was still unable to find whats wrong.He replaced my oil filter just to make sure since it was supposed to be all clogged up.

a Week back it happened about 4 times in a 2 mile stretch and it has been in the mechanic shop all along.He has been able to replicate the problem just once and he says the engine seems to die down.

Its making me frustuated since there seems no explanation for this behaviour.

Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.Please help!!!!

Not to be a dick, but does anyone else find this amusing? :rolleyes I think its kinda funny your car just shuts off at speed. :D

Hope you resolve this so your car doesn't cause an accident and kill you or someone else.

Just a suggestion, check your fuel filter, that really is an odd problem, never heard of such a thing. :confused

:) yep!!I posted it in the M3 section just seeing the E36 part...then realised what I was doing and posted a thread on the 328 section too...

funny thing is i got 4 replies here and none on the other board...

thanks for your responses guys...let me know if you think of anything remotely related to the problem...wud help greatly

it happened to me before. no idea what happened but it never did it again. happend in the first year now my cars 8 years old. it had a huge stench of gas smell in the car. it probably flooded. this was on high way driving.

my car started shutting off at speed, I was even on the freeway a few times and it just shut off and wouldnt start for a while. My DME shorted out and the dealer replaced it under CPO.
