Why should he replace the water pump? Is that because the early M3's had the plastic impeller? I have a 97, does anyone know if it has the plastic, or metal impeller?
Thanks!

97's should be metal, not to worry.

The rear shock mounts are a known failure item about this time. You can tell if yours are bad by a slight rattling sound from the rear shock towers when traveling over bumps.
Replace is pretty easy for DIYers. Replaced mine in about 2 hours using the Bentley and Haynes manuals as guides.
