View Full Version : Bet you never raced one of these!
As the owner of a 1.9l Z3 I don't really go out looking for fights too often and yesterday was no different. I was driving home approaching the end of one highway and the long onramp to another when I see a car coming up fast in my rearview that I don't recogize. As it gets closer I see that it is a DeLorean, I pull to the right hand lane so he can pass and I can get a peek but he never passes. He comes up on my left and matches my speed giving me a look that I take as he wants to play. The upcomming onramp is a long two lane left hand turn that almost makes a complete circle. I downshift and sprint onto the ramp, the DeLorean gets behind me and starts to follow. I easily take the ramp at way over the 88mph the Delorean is known for and he can't even come close to keep up with me. I lose him in my rearview as I merge onto the next highway so I slow down hoping that he will catch up and I can get another look at the Back to the Future mobile but he stays far behind me and I had to take the next exit. Oh well, it always fun seeing a car that is hardly ever seen on the road and it is even more fun when you find out you can go faster than they can!

Must be something wrong with his flux capacitor if he didn't time warp when he hit 88... :dunno
Deloreans were cool back in the day but dang, they're so old now. I'm sure if you find one to play with it shouldn't be much of a problem. Still look cool though.

I don't think he ever got to 88, by the way he followed me it looks like it would need a STRAIGHT of at least a mile to get there. No way he could keep up with a BMW in the turns, but his car did have much cooler doors than my Z.

If he did get to 88 mph, he'd have disappeared from your rearview and re-appeared later, hopefully not in the middle of rush hour traffic... :D
I dont think he wanted to go 88 because he would have time warped :devillook

I don't remember the Deloreans being that great reliability wise. Where the heck do you take those to get worked on, anyway? I doubt any of them are really raceworthy.

I was messing around with one on the freeway a few months ago. We were definately going over 88 mph :-)
I actually saw it once at the maintenance bay at the local Ford dealer, if you can believe that.

I am not what you would consider raceworthy either, at least not until I can at least get the Downing Atlanta SC I'm saving for. I knew they were a pretty big disappointment performance-wise compared to their unique styling but that is kind of like how the Z3's were when they first came out. Now there are bigger Z3's and M's

Just found this on a Delorean site as I was also interested in what they had under the hood:
130-horsepower Peugeot-Renault-Volvo fuel-injected, aluminum, 2.8-liter V-6 engine with a Bosch K Jetronic fuel-injection system

And how much did they weigh? 130-hp... out of a V6... was that a lot back in the 80's?

It's mid-engine, right? Sounds about right for a mid-engine RWD car.

Not positive but I do think it was a mid engine rwd. Even so it is no where near balanced,

What about the Porsches? And the Opel Speedster? I thought they were similar to the Delorean numbers. :dunno The rear-bias cars seem to be much more fun in the turns, at least when playing GT3. :D

Actually a friend of mine has a Delorean, the thing is in perfect condition. I helped him do a brake job once, undercarriage was mint. The thing is a slug though, no match for any bimmer.

Well, see, a Delorean in mint condition is definitely a nice sight. I'd almost feel bad creaming it in a race. ;) Honestly, though, if I owned a mint Delorean I wouldn't be driving it that hard.
