View Full Version : Euro ECU in US car - or air mass meter????

I've taken my 92 325i to a local import mechanic because it is missing out and backfiring. I've already cleaned the idle control valve, replaced the O2 sensor, changed plugs, etc.

The shop tells me it is misfiring on cylinder 5, so they have swapped coils, cleaned and swapped injectors, carbon cleaned intake, and checked for vacuum leaks. No luck. They found that the air mass meter is not working properly - when air filter is removed, it says airflow actually goes down. This is definitely a problem, but why would it be worse on one cylinder? They also say that the ECU is not original and is a euro ecu, but don't know if that is a problem. I wish I had a spare of each to try, but can't find a donor car around here. Please help, I don't want to throw money at things that won't fix my car!

I will have to check back with the shop to see if they can tell me the VIN on the ECU. I'll call them tomorrow!

The cylinders never get the same amount of air and they never produce the same amount of power. That depends on the design of your intake and the plenum volumes. It's fluids' business ;) . I have no idea about the euro ecu though. Why would you run without the filter anyway?

Air filters are over rated. I just yanked the whole air box off and my car runs much beter.

could be a valve problem.

Well, they only removed the air filter for a few seconds to see what the air mass meter did. The air flow readings should have went up, but they went down instead.

The ECU# is 0261200402

I bought a used air mass sensor that was supposedly tested ok on Ebay. I'll put it on and see what happens!
