When you guys go drifting, do you use different tires than you are currently running? If not, how do you get all the money to keep replacing them

i'm currently looking for some 16's with my bolt pattern & an offset good enough to clear my brakes. then i will pick up some junk tires and put those on my rears for the event. then i will drive back home on my stockers

I just got back from a drift event in Ohio. I was the only BMW there! At least i made it to the finals :)

I found some ebay 16" wheels for like 10 bucks each, and threw on some 205/55's. Contrary to what has been said, M3 are good drifters, but lack the gears, the power, and the tail-happiness to compete against the 240's. What makes the M3 such a dominating car on the track makes it hard to big-drift. You really need to set it up to get the long nice smoking drifts. My trick is using smaller tires, since I prefer to keep my car stock. Works great. I'd recomend anyone with an M3 to take it out to an event. You'll have a blast even if you've never done it before, and you'll learn soo much about the car's dynamics.

I would def be into it. Only problem is the only size wheels that will clear my brakes are 18 X 8.5 at least. I don't know of any cheap wheels/tires in that size :(

BTW--That video was hot!!!

i thought i had the same problem as i have the ap big brake kit, but the kosei wheels in a 17 fit over the calipers great, even though the stock 17s didn't.

You need 18's to clear your REAR brakes?

my m3 is a ZCP 13.6 in the front and 12.9 in the back. Actually i miss spoke...i know i can fit some 17's on my rears...but absolutaly not on my fronts. I think their are only a few 18's that will clear those brakes. Anyone know of any?

Here's a pic from this last weekend, everyone was trippin out when I drove up because i was in a stock m3, they were like "who's this guy in the bimmer", then I was the only person able to get the whole course in a stock car and then thats when people started giving me mad props for the car and driving and what not, some couple came up to me from the big track and told me they couldnt believe the handling of the car stock because of how easy it looked to maneuver it around the corners. I was just happy that I was able to take a stock car there and show people what these cars can do from the factory. Anyways, clutch kicking in 3rd or high 2nd was perfect for this course, i agree with the above comment about the gearing thing, in really tight spots i had to shift to first for a split second because of how technical and small it was. Anyways heres a pic.

to this day I still just don't get drifting. I have seen it live and didn't care for it. While I can appreciate the car control it takes it just doesn't do it for me. :dunno

No just a couple of demos. But I did hear of a lot of "bad things" going on at one pro event with the crowd which has also turned me off.

the first drifting event i went to was amateur, and it was kinda boring. since then, i've been to two d1 events, and they are awesome! these cars (some of which are straight from japan including the drivers) are built for drifting and the surely put on an awesome show.

this m3 video wasn't very exciting.

Think of drifting like freestyle motorcross, but with cars.
