What was the best BMW of all time?

I'll take the top 3 and we can battle it out later!

-George

PS. Yes, the E38 was my idea.

I didn't know a difference between the 3.0CSL and the M3 CSL. If it's the engine, y would anyone chose the 3.0?

I should have put the 2002 in, my bad.

3.0 CSL

EDIT: Why are you making this poll if you are unaware of the 3.0 CSL? It's pretty much the reason there are M cars, although that's debateable.

Depends on the definition of "best".

If not for the 2002, there's a good chance none of the later BMW's would have seen the light of day.

And how can you leave off the E28 M5? It's the perfect example of motorsport technology in an everyday sedan! The essence of M!

And you don't know the difference between a 3.0 CSL and an M3 CSL? Tragic.

E39 M5 is what i really love, but the E30 is what really put BMW in the sports coupe/sedan category. I remember riding in one for the first time when i was a kid, it was a 1989 325is...ever since that i car i knew i had to have a BMW. :D

I think the e36 M3 deserves to be mentioned. After all, this model is what really put the "M" on maintstream American streets and it continues to be a great street fighter and track car (even after 10+ yrs old in design). Choosing one, for me though it would be an S54 M coupe...gotta love the shoe. :)

850csi for sure the best production car.

Have you ever had to pay to maintain one? That V12 is a nightmare. 840's were much better cars, even if they don't have all the bling of the CSi.

I think a lot of good cars have been left out (Mille Miglia winning 328's, e28 M5, and e36 m3's were not mentioned) ... Personally i'm gonna have to go with dirtboy, i've always been a sucker for the old batmobile.

My vote would be for the 2002, considering it helped BMW make a large impact on the US market, as well as allow for future generations of BMW's.
But then again, im biased.

Not completely a BMW but, I gotta give props to the McLaren F1, 6.0 liter ///M V-12, over 100hp per liter. That's the shit right there.

If not for the 2002 showing what a sport sedan should be we would probably be discussing some Japanese mark in this forum. Everthing we enjoy about these vehicles her in US is more or less directly related to its success. Those of us who have had the pleasure to drive one back when 302 Camaros were considered hot understand this.

The E36 M3 was far superior than all other performance cars of its time and still is for the most part... The handling and the power that you feel.
