Lookin for a new car

well, my wife is expecting twins that means that my VW GTI has to go, :( , however, I always wanted to get a 1998~2001 740i or 5 series.

Please tell me is there anything I should be worried about and what mileage should be my treshold for this cars. I will need this car to be trouble free for at least few years.

I do not know much about BMW other then they are nice, VW on the other hand I know very well, so if you have any questions regarding VW let me know.

I hate to say it, but BMW automatics are generally not so hott. I would go for a 528i 5pd if I were you. The six cylinders are usually better off than the 8's. For either a 540 or 528 I wouldn't put too much worry into mileage. The 98-00(I believe) are work horses and BMW six cylinders will last for a while.
