Ive been searching all over the place trying to find a write up or anything that explains the best procedures of pulling a e36 (preferably 6 cylinder) motor out. Ive been told that you can lift up from the top by seperation of motor and tranny or drop everything from the bottom at once. Please if you have any info on this post up ;)

As a previous e36 325i and Bentley manual owner. Ive removed my engine when it threw a rod without the manual and was a little puzzled on the harness removal aspect but the rest was pretty strait forward. Upon obtaining the Bentley manual i found it to be of little help due to the fact that the way things where arranged it was a fight to find anything. Ive seen 902849023490230940923490234 of DIY's on 23490320492304032432-94032 different things for BMW's and its hard for me to believe that no one has done one on pulling a motor :confused

Why do you need a DIY...and why didn't you do a DIY on this? :dunno

Well, Bentley says remove tranny...then engine out the top, tranny out the bottom. I read recent thread where I guy said that the engine and tranny can be pulled out the top w/o diconnecting the manifolds...maybe do a search on engine removal in E36 and E36 M3 boards. All i got...

if your gonna pull the motor pull the trany and motor together (i left my headers on too)...it's way easier that way. I followed the bently to remove my motor the only confusing part was the wire harness and a/c compressor since mine wasn't the same as the bently manual one....
be sure to set your hood to the service position (one bolt though the hinge on the drivers side. remove that bolt and hood opens almost vertical. the tranny and engine can come together. the job will be easy if you use a load leveler on your engine hoist. this will allow you to easily tilt the engine as you raise it out of the bay so you don't bang anything.
the steps to removing the engine are too numerous to list I have 9 sections sticky noted in my bently....
I only had a 4 banger so the engine bay wasn't as crowded but a six can't be that much different...

I see. well i also think pulling the 6 out with motor and tranny connected shouldnt be to much harder. another thing ive noticed is that the engine harness go directly to the ecu in the firewall spot. does this mean you can just unplug the harness from the ecu and leave it attached to the motor?

yup. I just finished a engine swap on my 328 yesterday. Its a pain, but def. doable. Just takes some time and patience, I did it in a parking lot with hand tools, but I also pulled the front end off the car to make it easier since the tranny was attached, I would def. pull the front end off again, it was sooooooooo easy to pull it straight forward.
Oh, and I did not use a manual, I just figured it out as I went.

In changing out a motor a week or two ago we should have pulled out both motor and tranny at the same time (this really only applies if you have a load leveler). We put them in at the same time and it was cake, without the front end removed.
This was putting a 2.8 into a DSP 325i (jmott's car).

I did it without a load leveler, wasnt too bad.

I have to take out my engine next month, and I plan on removing bumpers and pulling straight out. I also have to remove radiator, driveshaft, and rear subframe.. so it all has to go in my case.

The base of the steering column is kinda in the way... Bungy42 and I tried the same thing last summer while dissassembling a parts car... The nose of the car was gone, so we figured we'd basically chain the engine to the rafters, and push the car backwards out of the barn... We were pulling with the tranny attached, which kinda reduced the "wiggle room" to get the bulge in the sump around the steering.... It's doable tho, just lotsa shoving and opportunities to crush hands....

Pulled the motor and trany together with the entire front end on the car. Installed the new motor the same way. (intake manifold was off and needs to be taken off)

I did this recently.
MUCH easier to leave the tranny on.
Didn't have to take any of the front clip out, just the radiator

In the 4 cylindar you couldn't pull the wiring hanress with the engine. (having the wiring harness in between the upper and lower intake manifolds didn't help) the battery cable injector wiring and every other wire that goes in the car is in that harness. i had to unhook all the sensors from the harness (after labeling them all) and disconect the alternator and starter wires and then I layed the whole wire harness on the windshield. I did unplug the ecu so the whole wire harness could move farther up to get it out of the way.
The 6 may be differnt in the way it connects....all I know is on the 4 it was a pain in the ass...

pullling the 6cyl is not too bad. I pull out the top, my buddy drops out the bottom... to each their own.
There are two pretty easy methods... 1: remove the nose panel, headlights, and core support or 2: use a load leveler to tilt the engine as it comes out.
I ALWAYS pull the engine and trans at the same time.
