Has anyone owned both of these vehicles who could give me the pros and cons of owning and driving both. I currently own (and) love a 99 M3 and an 89 325IS. Thx, Steve

This is what i would call a rhetorical question. Of course the M5 is the way to go. It is the undisputed and the ultimate sedan. The e46 is a beauty too but you can't compare it to a M5. It's like comparing Star Wars and Star Trek

The M5 is rarer, and will be more of a status symbol. Around here m3s are everywhere. I've never driven either, but I'd imagine the m3 is more nimble. My 540 is absolutely superb on the highway. The m5 is probably even better. You'll just have to drive both and make up your own mind.

It's like comparing Star Wars and Star TrekWith Star Trek being the superior of the two, just in case anyone's unclear on that.
What do you want out of the car, a nimble, light rev-loving machine, or the Autobahn cruiser from hell that eats almost anything in its path?

That is my problem! I like both - I have driven both and love both. I wish I could just own both. I have 2 kids under 9 so the M5 is tempting. If I go with the M5 I can't afford to keep the e36 M3, and that makes me worried about missing the small tossable M3. I guess I shd go drive both again. Thx for the advice so far!

M5 is your answer. You're only kidding yourself if you feel you're losing anything in handling or "tossability" with the M5. That might be true when pushing either car to 110% on the track on a series of super tight s curves. In real every day conditions, even the most radically spirited conditions, the M5 is surrendering nothing to the M3.
However, the M5 will cost you more than double to maintain and insure.

They are like sportbikes. Do you like 1000cc or 750cc. Both are fast, just ones bigger than the other.
