I have had the K&N setups on a number of vehicles. At times I've heard warnings that they don't filter as well as even the stock paper filters do. Now I'm shopping for a BMW and I read this on the conforti site:

Why do we use an ITG Foam filter? The best-performing and safest low-restriction performance air filter you can buy: Testing has shown these filters to remove all particles above 10 microns in size. The particles between 10 and 20 are most harmful to your engine. Compare this to cotton gauze which cannot filter below 20 microns. The ITG has a much higher tolerance for dust penetration than other filters on the market, maintaining up to 80% of its flow capacity when dirty. Lower maintenance than other filters, it simply needs to be wiped off or the occasional wash.

So, does anyone have an opinion they would care to share? I'd hate to shorten the life of my engine by choosing the wrong CAI. What do you folks think?

I have a conforti cai with an itg filter. I clean my throttle body before I put it on because it was filthy from the pepboys intake the last owner ran. Anyways when I looked at my throttle body the other day it was clean which is a good sign the itg is prolly doing its job.

I've had both. Have ITG right now. Either filter is fine.

OE paper is best in terms of filtering. If its a big issue for you, just stay OE.

The key is to follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and re-oiling the filter.

I've had my ITG filter for a couple years now and have had no problems. Oil analysis results show no filtering issues.

I know on Audi's I've heard K&N's run the risk of getting "red oil" on your MAF sensor if too much is on the filter.

But I have one and my car's been fine for a while now.

the only downside to foam I know of is that it breaks down with heat and age. I heard that from Supra guys who stopped using the green foam HKS filters.

but I think both are fine. both are about the same price I think too so.. get whateva.

personally I've always used K&N though. the foam deterioration thing makes sense. and I don't know how great all those random bubbles in foam is at filtering anyways..
