Took it to a shop to get my car aligned when the technician came to me and said the front part can't be adjusted cuz the tie rods are frozen. So much for adjusting the toe.

So my question is, when I replace it, do I need to replace the whole assembly, or will the tie rod ends suffice?

Replace the entire thing. Its only $20 or $30 more for each, and the inner balljoints DO wear out.

when i did my alignment, i also had frozen tie rods. i just got the torch and heated the metal which allowed to break free for adjustment. get a 13mm snap on long reach with flank drive so you dont round the adjuster.

i just got a set of complete tierods, not just the ends from ebay for $54 shipped, cant beat that with a stick. then had the dealer install them and do an alignment. the tech told me that with a person in the drivers seat, the alignment is basically right on. without the person in the car the front is off very slightly, but nothing to worry about. said it was better than almost every M3 he had aligned in the past. anyway, get the tierods from ebay, good deal and good quality.
