View Full Version : Thinking of buying a Cooper S...but will it be enough power?

I briefly test drove a Mini Cooper S a few months ago and fell in love.

My only question is that I associate with people who drive 350Z's, E36 M3's, etc etc and I dont want to get slapped around by those cars daily.

With some simple bolt-ons such as intake, exhaust, upgraded pulley, and an ecu chip how much horsepower (ballpark) could a mini make and would that be sufficiant (with manual transmission) to keep up with or beat cars such as those listed above?

If not, what mods, if any can be done to the Cooper S to get it into that speed catagory while still being a reliable car?

Is a mid-high 13sec 1/4 mile possible from a cooper S? and if so could I reach this with the simple bolt-ons listed above?

I love the car and really want one if I can be sure that I can make it quicker than it is (not to say it is slow at all).

Thanks in advance!

Right now my car has 3500k miles with just 15% reduction pulley and GIAC reflash. I made 170whp and 160tq. I'm sure with intake and exhaust I should be in the 180whps range.

Besides, you don't need that much power when you can outhandle 350zs and e36 m3s in stock form. :D

We have an 05 MCS here with a 19% pulley, software, intake, exhaust and it doesn't keep up with our e36 M3 and our e46 M3 at all...in a straight line that is. However, I am able to beat our e46 M3 in an autocross course by at least a second every time. :buttrock

has anyone heard what the power-bump for the MC/MCS is suppose to be for 2006? Last I heard there was gonna be -some- increase.

You can get all the power mods you want, but if you can't drive, it won't make a difference.

I can drive ;)

I just got my eurotuner with the turner motorsports MCS in there. It has the basics: intake, header, exhaust, pulley, computer upgrade and a 35 shot of nitrous.

With the nitrous spraying on stock injectors Turner says it dynoed at about 240 horsepower. E36 M3 = 240 horsepower With as much power as an E36 M3 (while spraying) shouldn't a MCS beat the hell out of the M3 because its lighter?

Roughly 200 crank horsepower (without nitrous) seems to be a good amount to me for a small light car. What exactly is the MCS weight?

My next car will either be this or a 350z and I'd rather stay with BMW or BMW related cars over anything else. But I also want a car that can perform on the straight in addition to the turns.

How much power would a Mini need to produce to just get into the 13's 1/4 mile (13.9 seconds at least)? And is it possible to make that much power?
Will then engine last with that much power being produced?

Thanks again!

Well, the John Cooper Works S runs 14.6 through the quarter with the rags piloting it. With minor weight reduction and good tires, I'd think you could see low 14's. Based off of that. A full exhaust, 19% reduction pulley, intake, etc. should pull high 13's, and be pretty quick off of a roll.

Well, here are some unofficial quarter mile times from various MCS's

buy this kit for your Mini and it will be as fast as you want it to be.

If you put all the boltons+stuff it will be pretty fast
Intake
Pulley
Header
exhaust
Intercoler
Head
Cam
etc..
That makes for one really quick mini..

But if you really wanna be fast TwinCharge it (300+hp) or wait for the new Turbocharged 07 Minis.. (i bet they will be pretty easy to Mod)

Is a twincharger actually practical?

What does it cost and how many people have them installed? (assuming you know).

While I cannot speak to MINI tuning experience, I do think it has a long ways to go to reach the 13-second category.

If you are comparing a modified MCS, you might as well line it up against a modified 350Z or e36 M3. I would suspect your buddies aren't even stock.

Can a MINI catch-up to stock e36/350Z levels and still be streetable? Probably... but to actually hang with your buddies you'll probably need something fairly radical.

I think my wife's stock '05 MCS is VERY fun to drive, and a pretty quick car... but it doesn't remotely compare to my M3. OK, I am not stock and she is, so its a pretty unfair contest, but I think it will take a LOT to catch-up. I say this assuming your friends cars are modified (or soon would be if they thought you could beat them, lol)

Everything else about the car is great, we really like ours. I am not saying anything bad about the MCS, just accept that its not the fastest car on the road (but still does a LOT of things great!).

That is some wicked power. In due time, my MINI will get there. I've been there and done that with past cars already. I see no reason why this one won't get transformed either. But...all in due time. :)

We saw a twin-charged MINI this past weekend at the Dragon, I believe it belonged to one of the guys from Helix. It sounded great, but unfortunately we never got to see them do any runs. Not alot of people are twin-charged yet, but the number is slowly growing. If you are really interested talk to some of the shop owners such as Helix that have done this. Most of the MINI guys are fairly straight forward. Actually, noe that I think about it, it might have been one of the DetroitTuned guys cars that was twincharged. One of the 2 :help

Wow, you were lucky enough to be at the Dragon??? I will be there next year.. I found out about this "dragon" even only in the last 2 weeks or so... Just been a proud MCS owner in the last 3 weeks :D ....

They had a MINI track day in Buttonwillow, CA this past weekend, and I remember reading they were trying to get the SPI guys to come down and run their twincharged car.. I wonder if they did?

Yep, we went to the Dragon, made our reservations in January and almost missed a room at the Fontana where everything was based. I think we're going to go ahead and get our reservatin for next year. We had a great time, the only real damper was that there was supposed to be a midnight run Saturday night. A few of us did the run early to come back and get a pull-off to film the group, but a guy in a Miata wrapped the front end of his car around a tree, which then broke in half and fell across the road  :rolleyes The guy wasn't injured too bad (probably b/c it seemed like he was drunk :mad )We helped move the tree of the road, but the big group cancelled the run to stay out of the way of the cops/ambulance, a few people came through, but not the number we had expected. Stupid drunk people :nono :mad

I should clarify that I will be pushing about 210-215 at the wheels. That's a nice little group of horsies that will be under my MINI bonnet! :)

200 whp, no head, no cam, stock injectors, no nitrous, no turbo. Recipe for success: header, cat back, 17% pulley (19% is too hot and brings the blower over its efficiency point), TUNED unichip (HUGE DIFFERENCE!!), M7 AGS (thats air gain system).

I spank E36 M3s and 350Zs on a daily basis. Cant wait to get head, cam, injectors and some nitrous :evil2

Its funny how I posted last year about how Jacks mini from DAI motorsports was puting out 265hp and everyone replyed back that its is impossible for a MINI to put out that much power .
Yet here is a perfect example of a MINI with 300hp .
Man how time can prove people wrong .
