View Full Version : How much would a cracked head cost me?

At the track I developed either a failed head gasket or a cracked head. Car overheats on the track (not at low rpms though). I bled the radiator a couple times and air keeps coming out. We figured something really bad is happening, no water in the oil but sure enough there's water coming out the tailpipe.

I'm wondering how much a new head would cost but more importantly is anything else damaged in the engine. I just had the engine extensively reworked (3 to 3.2 conv.) with all new cams/springs/etc. I'm sure the shop that did the work would cover me on this but I'm wondering how much it might cost if they didn't.

well to directly answer the title question, a cracked head should be really cheap, maybe $100 ;)
Sorry, couldn't resist. I had a fully rebuilt/ready to bolt on head priced at $1800 last August, but ended up just needing valve job on my own head. If you could find one bare to put all your new parts on, I'd have to think you could do that for under half of that but haven't directly priced it.
DON'T continue to drive it, only increases chances of more overheat/warping when maybe it's only the gasket. Head has to come off either way.
Good luck
