View Full Version : Low-end torque loss

For my 97, at around 2000rpm, there seems to be no torque at all! I can floor it and the car won't go anywhere. It'll just be sitting there with the revs slowly creeping upwards. I've recently replaced my spark plugs and all the filters and the lack of power has lasted through way more than just a few gas stops. I have no CEL and there aren't any abnormal sounds.
I've been thinking it might be my O2 sensors? (but no CEL) or perhaps something to do with the vanos solenoid. Any other suggestions or way to diagnose the problem? TIA

check the thread that has to do with replacing the vanos solenoid by supabimmer... that might be a problem
Yep, could be a VANOS problem.

If it's as bad as you make it sound you may not be running on all 6 cylinders. Check to see if you have spark on all 6.
Has this happened right after you changes the plugs? Make sure they all torqued correctly. You may have a bad coil too.

yeah I'll try to check out the vanos and make sure my plugs are good, probably try the solenoid supabimmer suggested. I forgot to also mention that my gas mileage sucks.

if he wasn't using all cylinders, normally you'd definately know it. Car doesnt just act sluggish, it has a sputter to it, and jerks and pulls and what not. At least that is how it is when a 4 banger loses a cylinder.

Dropping a cylinder on an I6 feels the same way. When my old 525i threw an ignition coil (#5 to be exact), you could DEFINITELY tell something was wrong - it was borderline driveable.

no the car is completely driveable and only happens down low. Around 3000-3500, the power picks back up and feels just like it should.

Definitely sounds like VANOS. Try unplugging the electrical connection to the solenoid and see if it makes any difference when driving. I have a used VANOS unit in my garage I'll sell you cheap.

Yeah I just disconnected the solenoid, drove around, and it seemed better. I went ahead and ordered a new one just to see how things go. Thanks

do not disconnect solenoid, that can possibly damage ECU and its bad. usually if it solenoid power will only kick in at 4k where cams kick in and then come on strong at 5k, with solenoid you will start feeling torque very low on the bottom end, like as soon as 3k and during daily driving there is alot of pull. also check for no vacuum leaks or anything like that.
