What is the plastic thing under the gas pedal. Is it some type of stop. It looks like a big screw with a grey plastic top on it. Do I need it. Thanks Joe

Under the gas pedal or the clutch pedal?

he stated gas pedal

edit: but i think it would be somewhat important. think about it this way, without that buffer stop, you could probably depress the gas pedal all the way down, but maybe there's a chance you could pull on the throttle cable too much. i'm not too sure about that part, but thats my guess

I think it is there so you don't break the cord (if the throttle plate is wire driven I don't know). The throttle plate can only open so far. So if you keep depressing the pedal, the throttle plate wouldn't open, only break the cord. It must be there so the pedal fully depressed goes far enough to completely open the throttle, but not break the cord.

OK - I just thought he might have meant clutch but typed gas. I don't remember a stop being unber my gas pedal.

it is just a stop, dont touch it. If you want to adjust your throttle cable, do so in the engine compartment

throttle is cable, not fly by wire. if you mess with that stop, you will break the cable if you adjust in further down, and you won't get WOT if you move the stop up.

You can also open your butterfly to far so that it will actually spin past 90 degrees and begin to close off the TB again.

Someone already asked, is your car automatic?

I have an auto M3. I have a thing under my gas pedal that is some sort of switch/button like what you described. If I mash the pedal hard enough to press in that switch, the car really takes off. For instance, when I'm crusing on the interstate in 5th gear, I can press the gas down to that button and my car downshifts. Press a little harder to press the button in, and the car downshifs even further. I haven't heard much about this on here since most don't have automatics. Is my car downshifting to third, or is it some sort of overdrive?

Do you have a picture of this thing under the pedal?

it is a pedal stop, just like somebody has under their clutch. It is set to stop your pedal at WOT. If you adjust it further down you are wasting your effort and possibly risk hurting your car.

Automatic or stick?

If automatic - it's the kickdown switch. If stick it's the pedal stop. In either case - leave it alone.

Manual has a screw on, adjustable stop behind the gas pedal. This must be set while the butterfly valve is being observed and after the cable is adjusted. It is much easier to replace the carpet with this removed, however replacing it takes a little time and attention.

ok, just cuz i was wondering what that is too and used "search" to find this thread. My auto has such a switch under the pedal and it has a wire lead coming out of it. Can we assume that it is a tranny kick down of some sort?

if you want to adjust the throttle cable, do it here..

well, the adjuster is to the right of the boot. trace where the cables go, one is for the throttle and one is for the cruise ctrl.
