View Full Version : how do i get my wheels off?!?!?!?
Im trying to replace my suspension right now and cant get my damn wheels off. First i tried a cross bar i bought at a local hardware store, put all my weight into it -> nothing. Next i tried a socket wrench with a 8' bar to increase torque -> wrench snaps. Finally i use a 200lb-torque impact wrench ->nothing. Is there a secrete to getting these wheels off or do i need a 600lb-tq impact wrench to get them off.

I would soak them in a liquid wrench type fluid for 2 days at least.
If you can't get them off with a long bar.... yikes! :eyecrazy
How about a blow torch? They ALWAYS work! :lol
do i need to remove that big bolt under the roundel? Im sorry this all sounds stupid as hell, but i havent removed my wheels yet so i have no idea how to do this, unless they are just rusted on or something.

keep jumpin up and down on the cross bar.. ..
youll eventually get it off.. took us about 20 times with my friends mroadster.. it was a bitch .. front wheel finally came off
i wouldnt recommend this method tho.. lol

so the nut under the roundel can stay there?
I cant believe these P.O.S. things are on there so tight. I cant believe the hardest part of my suspension swap is taking the wheels off :(

Get a longer breaker bar (such as the pole from your jack if its big enough), and impact socket and a solid socket wrench (one that doesnt rachet, but is welded into a 90 degree angle).
If your having trouble with this step of the install, I'd think twice about doing your suspension yourself. :)

If we're thinking of the same nut, then no it doesnt. That nut is for your wheel bearings/hubs and will take far more torque to remove than your lug nuts could handle.

I dont think using WD40 on them will do much considering the oil wouldn't reach the threads or have a chance to penetrate the area the bolt/wheel are making contact.
i think ill use my friends 600lb-tq impact wrench, that has to get it off.

:lol I didn't mean to totally crush your idea into the ground. On second though, try the WD40! Them sh*ts will fall right out! :D

You've never taken a wheel off. Are you sure you're turning it the right way. Counter clockwise, lol. Breaker bar always works. If not, slap a tube on the breaker bar and lay on the ground and slowly put your weight on the bar at the same time turn it.

Assuming that all the lugs have been removed!
and the car is on a jack stand!!
Kick it. They have gotten stuck on me before...just kick it on the edge!!
until it pops out.
but please, please..make sure all the screws are off!!!!

scratching head...... you can't get your wheel studs out or your wheel off?

The lug bolts dont want to come out, so kicking wont do any good. Read the thread everyone. :help

Somethings wrong here. I agreee with the guy who said maybe skip the suspension work. Like they said, WD-40, breaker bar, counter clockwise. There is no other solution. Heating is ill advised, because it will burn the paint on your wheels, and it will make the lug swell/expand and make it tighter. Heating is what you do to a nut, not a bolt, eh?
Do you have a torque wrench? You need one. When you put your wheels back on smear the lugs with some anti-sieze and torque them to ~77 foot pounds.
Never take you car whereever the lugs were put on last. They put them on way too tight.
BTW, getting the wheel off is the easiest part of the suspension job. Other than paying for it.

Try jumping on the breaker bar. It's gotta work, unless you only weight like 95lbs.

New idea: Take your car to a local oil change/exhaust shop/garage/whatever, throw them 5 bucks to break your lugs loose and then retorque them to factory spec. It wont take more than 5 minutes of their time. Then go back home and they'll come off easy. Just don't put them back on that tight.

Use a cutting torch and cut the wheel loose :devillook

Okay JC you stole my idea. :mad
It is odd that the nuts are on so tight. Things to remember. A good soak with a "WD40" like substance can help. When everything goes back together PLEASE use a torque wrench. If you live in an area like I do, use one drop of antiseize on the threads. Torque back on to specs, which I guess is about 100 ft/lbs. for your nuts. #### An impact gun will ruin your nuts and your rims if youare not careful!!!!!! #### (imho)

another reason why i love living here in so cal. don't have to deal w/ these things. get to reuse bolts always :), may wanna try a half inch breaker bar. bout 24 inches or so. i use this. if the bolt don't come out, it'll snap then ur gonna have to drill it/ worst case scenario (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=72326&group_ID=349&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog)

As everyone said, use a breaker bar. I've removed bolts from an 18 wheeler using a breaker bar about 4 feet long with not too much effort. And get a good quality torque wrench and torque your wheels to factory spec about 75-81 ft/lb torque.

Push down on one side while pulling on the other side of a box wrench wrench. If you aren't man enough to do it then ask a friend. :)

Find the last person who tightened them on there and smack them ... it should not be that hard ... its the person who tightened them up whose to blame, not you

Getting a impact gun would be the best...be carful if you use a breaker bar with an extention...remember they don't call it a BREAKER bar for nothing...make sure you are turning it the right way "Righty tighty, Lefty Loosie"..if you can't get the wheel off, maybe you shouldn't do the work yourself...
