I dont understand why theres such a big difference in money between the two kits. They used to be the same price. Anyone know why the one for the M3 is about $3000 more?

The Gen III Stage 1 is a Stage 2 Gen II intercooler and turbo.
Plus the kits now come with a HKS external wastegate and blow off valve and a turbo timer.

Dude, the answer to your questions is simply Active Autowerks are price gouging !!!! I spoke with some idiot over there like a year ago about the price of getting an M3 to 500 BHP and he told me it would cost me 18 K !!!! for the kit. I said what ??? When stage 2 is 10.9K wheres the extra 7 grand come in especially when there's NO engine work at all and its the same turbo !!! They gouge BMW owers for $$$ because they know they can. And frankly, there's not much quality competition out there against them, hence THEY fix the prices. It's funny how they stopped making available the $5,900 stage I kit for the M3 for a "third gen" one THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE for slightly larger piping an an external wastegate that you frankly don't need at such low boost levels, LOL.....what rip offs.
....On a side note, you can purchase a greddy T88 turbo kit thats good for WELL OVER 700 RWHP (850 BHP) for 3,800 dollars for supras due to aftermarket competition bringing prices down to reasonable levels. ...There's NO reason AA's stage I kit should be priced over 6 grand. At $5,900 it would actually be a good value for what your getting....anything more is rip off.
Active Autowerk is milking their rep. and the lack of competition for all it's worth...and you guys pay the price.

My thoughts exactly.

You're probably right Supra, but AA is the BEST at tuning. If someone could just make the piping and get the turbos, they would just need someone good to do the tuning to compete with AA.

Why do you say that AA is the 'BEST' at tuning? Is it only because they're the only ones who have made a turbo chip for the E36? (which, btw, they're not ;) ) Or is it because you think or heard that they are?
In my opinion, a good tuner is one that can provide stock or improved driveability, reliable operation, does not damage the engine, and MAINTAINS adaptation and lamdba control. Not all tuners out there can do that.

You're right Nick, I heard you're awesome at tuning too. I guess the reason why AA is expensive is because there is no other competition for them. I said they're the best because I heard they're the best.

So is everyone saying that there are other turbo kits out there for the E36 other than the AA and Mechtech? Is it even possible to find parts (especially the exhaust manifold) to get the parts for a turbo kit for an E36 and have someone else other than AA tune a chip?

Just wanted to add something here about AAs software programming.
My turbo M3 was installed and dyno tuned at Active Autowerke last december. The fuel tank had 93 octane. Karl Hugh did his thing and I went back to CA.
5 months and 10,000+ miles later, I have not have the need to get another chip from karl for any software/driveability/CHECK ENGINE light issues. But to be honest, I did contact him to send me another chip cause my M3 has bad misfires under full boost.
I seriously thought the 91 octane fuel was getting to it and had to get it fixed right away. But I change directions once I used 100 octane in the car. The M3 was still missing even with 10 gallons of racing fuel! Now I knew it couldnt be the software so I checked my spark plugs. Yup.. it was the spark plugs all right. The gap grew and I was stressing out the ignition system the entire time.
I told Karl about this and did not need 2nd chip for my M3. The car runs and pulls great at 9.5psi-9.9psi even on straight 91 octane fuel. Of course I have water injection on.
Will try to get another dynojet run next Wed.
