It was late and I was going fast, I heard the pothole before seeing it-- and the impact was loud enough that the people I was talking on the phone with jumped. I guess I'm lucky that this is all that happened-- I was certain that I bent my rim and shreded my tire or something.

There is a bulge towards the top of the sidewall of my tire, its about an inch long, and about the size of a 50 cent piece. What is this? Is it safe to drive on?

Photos? And also if there is a possiblity of the tire coming off, or causing you to drive off the road, then please don't drive on it.

Pinched sidewall. It's eventually going to let go. Your tire's probally out of round with it already. Replace it ASAP.

I agree. Get off that tire. It could last a year, or go at any time. You can be positive it will go just when you don't want it to, though.
Besides the possible inconvienance it would cause, the danger of it is too much of a risk.

My wife had the same thing happen in her car. I had it swapped for a new one after I saw the bulge grow from a nickel size to a 50 cent piece after a day. They were on a set of Dunlops. Just curious, but what brand did you have this incident with?

contisportcontacts. It happened on the 5 south just before the East LA Interchange. At night. There was no way I was pulling over, plus the car was driving fine. I checked it about 60 miles later. I got that far on it. I'll swap it with my spare befoe going into work in the morning.

A bubble on the sidewall of a tire generally indicates damaged cords caused by severe impact. It is confirmed by a visible corresponding break in the inner liner. Air has infiltrated between the plies and caused the bulge.

Happened twice already to me... there's no fix but to get the tire replaced.

Is this a warrenty issue? Should the side walls bubble from an impact?

You might be able to get it covered under a road hazard warranty.

You could try, but I doubt Contenintal would warranty it if you hit a pothole hard enough to freak the person on the phone. Tires are tough, but not unbreakable.

At least the tire survived long enough for you to get home and change the spare.

Road hazzard don't really cover pot holes.. I had the same issue happen to me and my insurance would not cover it, just replace the tire and save the drama.. :-)

My warranty didn't cover the bubbles on the tire either :(
