If you're replacing your shifter I'd suggest you go with a Z3 or M3 shift lever and new bushings. If you want a notchy feel, like what most Mustang aftermarket shifters have then I'd suggest a UUC or B&M shifter.

The upper half of OE BMW shift levers is aluminum. Because the E36 linkage is suspended between the top of the gearbox and a rubber bushing mounted to the floor pan, you'll never get it quite as solid as the linkage in a T-5. The T-5's linkage is all inside of the gearbox case with no flex points except for the rubber bushing between the shifter tab and the lever itself. UUC's delrin carrier bushings and DSSR will help to eliminate a considerable amount of the slop in the stock setup though, I have both in stock now.
