View Full Version : Changing my suspension back to stock
Hi, I'm trying to swap stock shocks and springs. I have H&R Race Springs and Bilstein shocks which I'll be swapping for stock stuff. Now, I tried to get an estimate for labor, and I got a $425 from one shop, who claimed that since the stock shocks aren't in "one piece", and "no bracket" that it'll be more expensive. Anyone know what he's talking about? and is it a good price?
Thanks

Sorry, can't help on your inquiry, but I just wanted to know why you are swapping back to stock. Selling car? Ride quality?

Actually both. Hats off to people who can drive that setup on the street. I'm up in Northern Cali, call me a wuss, but the ride on anything but SoCal roads or freeways is unbereable.
Plus, I'm selling the car, and I've had people shy away when they found out it's lowered.

I guess I'm a wuss too, as I have no intention in upsetting the balance of performance/comfort of the stock setup.
I wish I could get rid of some body roll, though.

Swapping Springs and Shocks shouldn't be too hard. Ive done it numerous times, but not on an M. Hey, you in NorCal area? Do you have your stock setup yet, cause if not, i'd be interested in swapping with you + a little cash. Maybe I can do your install for you also. Let me know.

My rather rudimentary understanding of sway bars is that while the spring rates and shocks are unaffected, b/c the right and left sides are tied together, the suspension exhibits 'stiffer' characteristics in cases where one wheel moves alone.
Stated another way, if your right wheel hits a pothole with heavier swaybars, it will be more jarring because the bar makes the suspension act more like a solid axle. Independent wheel movement is 'dampened'.
Anyone care to comment?

Basically.. yes thats it. Its not a HUGE difference in ride quality. Its more of a solid feel than the shock of springs. Besides, u already have sways, just making them a lil thicker. :D
One wheel will still "move" alone.. u still have an independent suspension. Just a lil tighter.

Man, where were you 1-2 months ago :) Yeah, I'm in SF, and I was looking to swap them, but I've found someone to swap them with already...

My sugestion is that you find somone who wants to swap plus labor or leave the car as it is and sell it, you will find a buyer. There is little point in investing money into a car you are trying to sell unless it's apperance related as you wont get your money back at the sale.

That's what I've been trying to do :) Most people shy away from the car once they realize it's lowered. The car is amazing, it has Shrick Cams, Port & Polished Head, it has tons of potential. The first owner spent a small fortune on modifying this car. But that info is better left out for buyers, since they don't know what it is anyway.
