I am about to go pick up some new tires... I have been running 235/45/17 fronts and 255/40/17 rears on my t-stars on my e34. Was thinking about running 245's all around...
any experiences with this? 245/40/17 or 245/45/17?
quick responses would be appreciated as i am going to get tires in about 20 minutes.

i'm running 245/40-18 all around. for 17's, you'd probably want to run 245/45-17 all around.

Probably too late to help. I run 245 45 17 all around. Stock I think. I don't have anything to compare them with, but they seem good. and of course, you have the added advantage of rotating the tires, if you believe in that sort of thing.

smaller diameter, would throw off the speedometer by 1-2 miles.
effectively changes the rear end ratio to a slightly higher ratio - as well as lose a little mpg.
I think the 245/45 is a better fit, altho a touch larger.
here's a tire size calculator:

where can I find what all these numbers mean? How tall and wide are these tires?
I guess I should read all the above links!

245/45/17
245 - Tread width
45 - Tire sidewall aspect ratio (45% of 245)
17 - Tire diameter
Will the 245/45/17 all around configuration also work on E39 540I with 17" wheels? The stock tire for the fronts are 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 for rears. I am in need on new tires very soon, any best bang for the buck recommendation from tirerack?

Why would you want to change back from a staggered setup anyway?

was just curious since a lot of people run 245's all around... and all four of my rims are 17x8...

In that case I'd run 245/45, but have a look at the calculator link posted above it's pretty cool.
I just realized the tires in the back are bigger than the front. Does that matter running 245/45/17 all around?

I just looked at your avatar and since you have a 540/6, you should have a staggered tire setup. That means your rear tires are going to be wider than the fronts. There is no problem runing the same sized tire as that will allow you to rotate them. Oh yeah, same sized meaning 235 or 245 all around. 255 might be a little wide for the fronts.
