View Full Version : M5 Brake Duct Mod, Any Info Will Help
I have attached a photo of an M5 with brake duct mods, the two small round sliver rings in the middle of the lower opening in the bumper. I thought this mod was when you upgraded in an intake by Active Autowerks. I have a e39 none M5, but I have upgraded to an M5 bumper. Is this something that gets done only with M5's or can you do it to other e39 with M5 bumpers. The reason why I'm asking is because I don't want to do this mod if its something that only M5's get done because its part of an intake system. All in all I don't want to make my car look like it has something when it doesn't, but if this mod is to let more air thru the brake ducts, I think I want to do it, plus I do think it looks great. What I'm getting at is, I don't want to be the guy the puts and M5 badge on a car so it looks cool. Thats what I'm getting at most of all. So any info or opinions are welcome. Thanks

on a side note.. that is the best looking e39 m5 i have ever seen.
i know those rings are used for intakes on the m5's but if it works well as a brake cooling mod then why not do it? if it is fully functional and looks good i don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't think that is an M5, look at the rear view mirrors. I don't think an E39 M5 owner would change his mirrors.
Also the M5 badge on the front fender trim is missing.

Sink drains!!! very cheap alternative... :) I'm planning to get the M5 grill and do the sink drains or maybe the surround thing from a bandpass box... :buttrock

even if it isn't an m5 it is still one of the sickest e39's i have ever seen.

Most people use the stainless steel "Sweetheart" garbage disposal sink drains for the brake ducts.
So it sounds to me like everyone agrees that this is not just a mod for M5 but also for e39's that have the M5 bumper?

Looks like M5 mirrors to me. But I agree the M badge on the front door trim is missing. Either way, it looks good.
TG5, if you want the sink drain flanges on the front of you car, go for it. It's your car. But I'd definitely go for the Insinkerator brand - high performance model.;)

We'll the brake duct mod is complete, over the weekend I installed both stainless steel rings that will allow the air flow thru the ducts to the front brakes. Thanks for all your feedback and opinions on this mod. Take care. TG5
Now that there installed, feedback would be appreciated, good or bad. Thanks

Lamin-x, Its a film thats cut to fit your model car. You can apply it on like window tint. Go to www.Lamin-x.com and look up your car, if you don't see your car, email them and ask.

Yeah, 540's, at least my 01 comes with brake ducts that I could see clear thru to my disc brakes when the wheel is turned (to let some light into the fender well). I'd like to put visible rings in the front bumper to indicate I have brake ducts:).....has someone done this with 540 stock bumpers?
Thanks,

aye TG5, where did you get your sink holes at? also do you recall what brand they were? I picked up the M5 center grill today and spent half the day driving around looking for a nice set of sink holes....

couldn't find the sweetheart one but I got the $15 each stainless steel one from Home Depot... just finished putting it on... looks sweet... I also glued the brake ducts on so they are still fully functional. :)

GriMpY, that looks really nicely done!
Guys, has anyone done this cosmetic mod to a 540 stock bumper?

I don't think the opening on the stock non Mtech bumper is wide enough to fit it.

Grimpy, Your 5 looks great with the brake duct mod. What a difference it makes with two sink drains, hahaha. Cars looking good man. Are you going to upgrade to AE's? I have a company I rep for that is coming out with yellow xenon bulbs. I'm going to install them in the fogs as soon as they are avaiable the end of January. Any other mods you are planning on in the near future? Take care TG5

I'm not going to go with AE's. I been looking for yellow fogs, what price would it probably run for?

oh man... that would be sweet but too much $$$ for me.
I'm probably going to go with regular yellow fogs.

Is there anyone who sells these grills with the sink holes modified already? I want to do this but I don't think it will come out that great and I would hate to mess up a center grill I just purchased.
