It's been pretty cold up here lately, about 5-15 degrees for the last two weeks, and I hadn't started my 540i in about a week.. So I did that today, started her and let her sit a bit to warm up.

Anyway, found a small puddle of oil next to the driver front tire and when I opened the hood, I found this:

Oil was just oozing out the sides of the black cap. :shifty The whole setup was replaced once before at the bmw dealer a few months ago. Apparently, the previous owner broke the bracket or thing that holds the whole unit up and one of the hoses had a leak, so they replaced the hoses and bracket.

Anyone else have this problem before? The car has 58k on it. I'm assuming the seal around the cap has just warped/cracked/etc. due to the cold or age, but do any of you think it could be a sign of a more worse problem?

This is just cap O-ring failure due to high pressure, cold viscus oil being forced through the system. This O-ring should be replaced with each filter change. A new o-ring should come with a new oil filter. Otherwise the stealer can sell you a new O-ring for $1.00. I reccomend using a lower viscosity oil for your winter months........ OW-30

Agreed. Either the O-ring wasn't replaced on the last filter change or the cap to the filter container isn't fully seated.

Minor problem just get a new O-ring and also make sure you tighten it properly. That could have make a much bigger mess of your engine.
