if i put in 6 and run it and then keep checking and adding till its full will i hurt anything? obviously im going to shut the car off each time before i add. i was just wondering if running it at idle with a little low oil will hurt it

yes im 18 and have driven my m5 for 13 years without changing the oil. Its held up great. minus the smoke and very rough idle. that is when it actualy moves of course. ;)

6qts Bro.
make sure the crank is empty before you pull the filter or it'll pour oil everywhere.

thanks for the replies. got the oil changed succesfuly. is the filter supposed to be such a tight fit? i used a fram oil filter. also is there any way to reset the oil service time line without a code reader? i heard something about pushing certain pedals in a sequence or something.

i think only the new ones can be reset without a code reader. i picked one up on ebay for 40 bucks, and i hear you can do it with wires and some people on the forum use the wire method so there is probably some kind of right up if you do a search

You can reset the lights without the Peake tool. http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e34/911117-1.html
If this does not work, you may have to pull the wire out while the ignition is in position 2. I think that is what I had to do on the E34, E36 and E39.
