Hello, In regards to a E34

I have heared that you can check through the LCD module the vin number, and therefore compare it to the vin numbers on the rest of the car to know if the LCD module is the original.

I need to know this so when I check cars to buy, i can make sure that have really done the miles that the LCD module indicates.

How exactly can I check this function? I think its something like pressing the accelerator 5 times in a row with the ignition on accesory. Can someone please tell me exactly how to do it?

If you look at the odometer...and a "tamper" dot appears next to the mileage...then the mileage is off. The mileage is recorded in the coding plug that's in the back of the instrument cluster.

Go to the following link (Johan & Sean's e32 web site) and contained within the write up is the answer to your question as to performing a test to verify VIN: http://bmwe32.student.utwente.nl/johan/299960/299960.html

Thanks alot. So correct me if im wrong, I understand that BMW's after 91 could not have the odometeres tampered with?

Because my friend has an 89 525, and he said he replaced the module, and the odometer reset itself too. The reason why I ask, i am looking for a e34 540i. Was it impossible to reset the odometers on this car? That link is great, but it refers to <'91 cars only.

Thanks
