View Full Version : Why do people think manuals are better than autos?

I just can't figure it out on my own. What is the big deal....really?
People say manuals are so much better than autos, more efficient, and don't sap power.
Why? What does an auto have that makes it worse in these categories?

As mentioned above.... Have you driven both a manual and an automatic version of the same car?

I'm not going to go into depth here, but..
-More complete control over exactly what you want the car to do. In a manual, I can downshift in preparation for a corner; in an automatic, all I can do is mash the gas and hope for the best (probably break the rear end free when it snaps down to the next lowest gear or two).
-No horrid 'mushy' power delivery. Engine revs are directly associated with rear wheel revs. No awful torque converter to act like your foot is connected to the wheels through a giant marshmallow.
-Control
There is no longer any argument about efficiency. Modern automatic transmissions can easily match a properly driven manual in fuel consumption. That said, powering wheels through a fluid coupling is kind of like riding a bicycle in the sand. A lot of effort is put into nothing more than the generation of heat.

but if there were no automatic transmissions then what would happen to all those soccer moms in SUVs on cell phones with a coffee in the other hand while ther is a dog in their lap, all while yelling at the little bastards in the back to shut up in the middle of a lane change without signaling, when she barely knows how to drive as it is???
where god where will they go??

The biggest issue for me is the launch. With a manual I can control the revs and clutch slip to achieve the result I want; with the auto, I'm reduced to just stomping it when I want to go.
One plus for an auto is that it's far more comfortable in stop and go, creeping along, typical Houston rush hour freeway traffic.

I prefer a manual over an automatic.
However driving my Dinan 540 with the auto trans chip it feels pretty good for an auto and you have control over your shifting when you need and you can put it in auto when need be
However there is no better driving experience then a stick.
I vote a stick over an auto if your really into cars

those are some wide ass tires. 275 in the back isn't much bigger then 255 but man it looks they are right off a race car  with those bubbly side walls. actually the fronts look too wide not the back.
yeah... umm they're ugly you should get rid of them, just tell me what day you put your trash out.
GIVE THEM TOO ME
look guys if u have 1 car and u live in crawded city maybe the auto is better but as a drive teast i realy like the manual,if we compar a 535ia with a 535i OEM manual the auto will have the better acceleration . i drive a 535i e34 with AC SHNIDZER 6 speed manual i can`t say it isn`t a graet car but after a month i returnd to my auto 535i as a daily car . :nono

My dad bought shitty tires a few years ago to just get by as he was gettin his M5 in a few months. We bought some no name brand tire and 2 tires went bad got flats so thanks to america tire co they replaced the rears with goodyears and we still have the shity ones on front.
Soon im going to replace them all with some pilot sports. and all of the tires are 245-45-17

Um, power efficiency is still there I believe. Torque convertors can consume fuel about the same because they can lock up, but they don't lock up on acceleration as far as I know, and typically suck 5 % or more, more than a manual, as far as I know.

Modern, electronically controlled automatics know better than you do what gear to be in to burn the least fuel at a given speed and throttle position.
And of course, this doesn't take into account the driving style of your typical manual driver. :)

manuals are fun but it gets old if you live in a city with stop & go traffic; I miss my manual

I feel better knowing that there are gears in there instead of some black box magic that never f*cking lasts. Step on the fuel and maybe it shifts, maybe it doesn't.
I like the manual for reliability and control. If I can get the same thing out of an auto I might be persuaded, but until then I'll just hope I can swing an SMG next time. Best of both worlds.

i have a red
1990 535ia
1991 535im
the manual is in my sig, and the auto is my sister's driver.
i have driven both back to back and the difference in
really really apparent
quick list of mods
90 auto - 16" e39 538 wheels, oem springs, bilstien hd shocks, eat chip
91 manu - 17" wheels with 235 front and 155 rear tires eat chip ssk, aw
foock this its in my sig lol
anyway, right off the bat the auto suffers over 100lb weight penalty.
get in and drive the auto....u're stopped at a side road, trying to get
onto a busy intersection, with the manual u rev it up to 3 grand
and slip the clutch a bit vrroooom u're off...the auto u can't pick a
hole, u gotta wait for an opening =\
braking before turns is key too, u're in the meat of your powerband
with a manual coming out of that turn whereas the auto u're around 1500
stinky rpm. nothing ever happens at 1500rpm =[

you wouldn't have the crazies claiming "unexplained acceleration!. The other night they had one of those storeis (again) where the driver was running over everthing in sight because the car took off on its own. The idiot didn't have the sense to stomp on the brakes, move the gear lever into neutral, or just freaking turn the car off!!! This is endemic of drivers who've never learned how to drive a manual transmission car. There is a cognitive connection of driver control when manipulating the gears of a manual tranny that leaves an indelible imprint with the driver as to their input and mastery in manipulation of the cars power, movement, and control.
Those who've only driven cars with automatic trannies...many times are overwhelmed and are disconnected from the car and may yield control over to the cars innovative and electro/technological wizardry....and will sit there powerless as their car careens over bystanders, through walls, intersections, and landscaping.
That's one reason that manual transmissions are better than automatics. :cool

auto kicks ass bc they have a manual mode as well, but they arent a pain in the ass in the city plus when its me and my gf i dont wanna be having to shift gears every freaking second, ill wanna be massaging her leg or something else..... :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock :buttrock

manual mode doesnt do crap really, everyone can downshift their auto in to a selected gear, cars trucks SUV's they all have that. autos just suck (i have one) unless you dont like the shifting and constantly having to clutch in clutch out. but for the purposes most of us are here on this forum for manuals kick a$$. you kno how hard it is to break my back-end loose and drift my city if its not raining. btw both ya'lls 540's are nice so hush!

I had an auto M3 once and I can tell you I hated it. Had to buy a manual M3 after just one year. My wife has an auto 01 530i, everytime I drive it I use the Tiptronic for a more manual feel. My 00 M5 is a daily driver and at times the stop and go clutch in clutch out becomes a bitch, but it is quickly forgotten when I open up. I just think that if you want that sport feel, you gotta go with a manual. Obviously my opinion only.

btw, I can drive a manual, change CDs, and get the girl off all at the same time.... multi-tasking rules. :D:D:D
also, if you own it out of warranty, manuals > autos ALL DAY LONG>

I prefer to have a manual, however - since I'm in lovely SoCal traffic to/from work, I have a '91 535i automatic for that. Well, actually, that's all I have, since the divorce I'm going through forced me to get rid of the roadster.
The auto is fine for the stop-n-go traffic, but I really miss the manual for the times when there is no traffic, or Angeles Forest Hwy (or similar twisty fun canyon road) call to me.
To extract the maximum performance/control beneft, you need to have a manual transmission, IMHO.
