Any figure out what causes the display to go bad also.
Can it be fixed easily?

Here's a 9 page thread on it: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99432&highlight=pixel+display

Cliff notes: They all do it. Mine's being replaced this coming Monday, my service manager offered to do it under my CPO so I only have to pay a deductible (very generous and appreciated, typically you pay for an hour of labor or so, might be ~$100, the part is free).

Take it to your local dealer, ask them about it. If they don't offer a reasonable deal (i.e. less than $120 or so total for you), contact BMWNA and work it out. Info is in the thread link above.

Just curious, my cluster is missing pixels, but when they replace it, won't the gauge cluster just start losing pixels again, later down the road? Was this a design flaw with a permanent fix or are we just going to have to keep paying $90 every time our gauge cluster goes ape...

Yes it is a design flaw and yes it will continue to go out and yes you will have to continue to pay labor everytime it does or just live with it. The good thing is that it should last for about four years which means that I probably won't have this car the next time the pixels go out so I'm not worried.

I have a couple pixels out on my display but I can live with for the time being until more burn out.

My real concern is that the odometer is so poorly illuminated you can only see it at night time with the dash lights on. Even then it's difficult to read.

Would this be included in the compromise agreement with BMWNA or the dealership?

Thanks!
