Temp gauge

Hi all,

My temp gauge is behaving strangely all of a sudden ... It always has been
perfectly steady but the last couple of days it sometimes goes from the middle in the red pretty quickly, stays there a bit and then goes back to its
former position. I figured that from given the quick rise and fall (~5-10 seconds) I figured overheating wouldn't be the cause ... am I right?
The cooling system seems to be in perfect order ... fan(s) are working too.

My 97 did the same thing the other day.

All the sudden when i slow down for traffic it rises quickly. Then i start rolling again and it returns to normal.

Never did it again after that but made me think my rad was gonna fail.

Or maybe that my thermostat got stuck for a second.

any ideas?
