I am almost at 51k with my 97. I bought it last March with 38k. 13k miles in 9 months...oh yeah. Sold my 95 with 49k in May 03, only put 3k miles on it in over a year. 95 needed almost no maintainence, the 97 is still being a pain in the ass. Anyone else have their starter not disengage completely on startup...mine kinda goes for a few seconds. It sounds really ghetto. That and the mysterious whine from my AC compressor that no one can fix. Sorry for going off topic.

To be honest, a beater is only really good for rainy days and wintertime. When I got my beater (90 Geo Prizm) I figured I would save a lot of miles on my M, but truth be told if its not raining or snowing I enjoy driving my BMW too much and can't justify getting in that other POS....

I would say just enjoy driving your car, and when the mileage is too high, get another one and repeat....

Seriously, these cars are meant to be driven, not garage queens.

I just replaced the engine in it, found one out of a LTW with 14,000 miles on it. The original engine had a cracked cylinder head and was starting to eat coolant at a pretty absurd rate.... but other than that, all of the internals were fine. Zero oil consumption, still made good power. It started to consume coolant around 200k, and got worse and worse until I finally pulled it apart and realized the doom. But, you can't fault an engine after it goes a quarter million miles....

Does the car run well? I'd be scared of a car that was driven so infrequently. My 98 has 40k on it now. It had 29k on it when I got it 1 year ago. I figure it will have around 80k on it by the time I pay it off...not too bad.

We should see who has the most with the minimum work done on it, I've got a '98 M3 with 200,547 on it, and the only work was a top-end rebuild after the stupid plastic impellor disintegrated and overheated the engine. She still looks and drives like new. Love it.

Whats with all the LOW mileage M3's?
Do people by these cars and display them in the garage like a couch?
Seems like buying tickets in an amusement park to look at the roller coaster instead of riding it.

I perosnally like to get the most out of my money by driving the thing....

I think I win that category too... prior to recent engine replacement at 254,000 miles or so I had never had the head off the engine, the most involved repair was lifter replacement to cure ticking. Gearbox and diff are both still going strong.

i agree, but the previous owner of my car had a knee injury, so luckily for me, the mileage was kept down. before his injury, he put alot of miles on the M after he bought it back in 2000. he now has an S2K to play around with.
