Hey everyone,
I have 2001 530i. My question is,"Does anyone know how to change an oem angel eyes from a yellow color to white?" I have noticed that there are kits (example ccfl and ddh lights) out there for the 3 series, and for 5 series 2000 and below. Is there a kit out there that can be purchased to replace the oem angel eyes? I was also told by someone that the oem headlight housing is sealed in a way that would be difficult to open and reseal unlike the highlights before it. If anyone has any ideas and pixs of successful installations please reply. thanks

if you want any color you can do what i pioneered and find some stained/colored glass and use it as a filter over the angel eye light bulb. i'll post some pics later if you're interested.

its fairly simple to do. i just cut the glass to squeeze into the bulb housing held in by interference friction. its the holidays now so i'm rocking the red glass and a multi-colored, blinking light christmas wreath :D

hey thanks.. man i have gone through hell trying to change them. I bought like the ccfl from ebay twice and they were only made for bmw e39 2000 and below. your tech. will save me money on shipping hahah and time. okay is it possible to change the color of the bulb inside instead of placing a glass in front of the bulb? where did you get colored glass that can stand the heat? can you use formax tape? i'm more looking into changing them to a blueish white. Should i use a lighter blue glass?

as far as i know its hard to find colored bulbs that fit the housing. this is a solution i came up with and has worked for over 2 years.
i got my colored glass for *free* from the craft center at my college out of their remnants bin. as far as i know any glass you're going to find will take the heat.
i'm not familiar with formax tape.
i have some very light blue glass that i used to achieve a white appearance. i have orange glass too, but never use it.
if you can find a place to get free glass (remnants) you can experiment and play with all the colors of the rainbow like i got a chance to do. keep in mind that the darker the glass appears the less light will transmit through it giving a lower intensity.

Skipper,
How did you cut the glass? Could you measure one of the pieces and post the diameter?

well i did that in a less than elegant manner. i found that i was able to break off little chunks of glass using the pliers in the trunk tool kit and fit to size. i kept working the glass and trying to fit it in the socket until i had a good, snug fit.
i don't know the diameter of the socket. go in your garage, open your hood, pull the AE socket and measure the diameter. all my glass is in my E39...which i won't have access to for another week. (rocking the bronco and trailer right now :))

Thanks, Jensen.
The reflector is tapered sharply at the front, then more gradually toward the back. The outside of the reflector is about 30 mm and line where the taper chages is about 25 mm. So depending on the thickness of the glass, about 28 mm is probably about right.
I plan on doing this as soon as I get time. I'll post the infor when I get a chance.

SKIPPER 5 THANX TO U NOW I CAN DRIVE AROUND TOWN LIKE A POLICE PATROL. hehehe. Last night I was behind the cops the whole time, they had their sirens on and I had my lights on. The guys in the back of the jeep were looking at the light, "i had a feeling they wanted to shoot the lights..... naaaaah it was cool and everyone loved'em."

HAHAHA, congrats, and you're welcome. i don't often ride around with the red and blue because i'm pretty sure the bored cops in my town would pull me over at first sighting. have fun and experiment with all the colors of the rainbow!
