What are the symptoms of a bad vanos?

I hear a quiet "whining" under the hood, you can especially hear it after you rev it up, and let the revs die down to idle. Car seemingly has different power at different times. Just curious if anyone has had any similar symptoms before I bring it into the shop.

Symptoms I had were weak midrange power, off idle to ~4500rpm. Also experienced the
vanos unit sticking, resulting in inconsistent power delivery similar to what you describe.

New vanos unit solved the problems, and was quiet for a few thousand miles, but is
noisey again. :mad:
