This is my 1st BMW . Also be advised this sounds like a stupid question. When you pop the rear trunklid is it supposed to just unlock? or does it unlock and raise up ? On my wife's Infinity I-35 trunklid the trunk completely raises up. My trunk just unlocks but does not raise up. :eyecrazy

Sorry, it's not power operated. You press the latch and it unlocks and you lift up.

Your E39 is NOT an I-35 in many ways.
(Consider yourself lucky)
Most of us long time, and repeat, BMW owners are not terribly concerned with having the trunk lid lift automatically for us. Some of us even shift our own gears. :rolleyes

A lot of trunklids are spring loaded so when they are unlocked they open on their own. They aren't necessarily powered. The e39 trunklid doesn't do this.

That is an anti-theft feature. You will never see a trunk in the parking lot on an E39 sitting accidentally open.
