So i bought this clean 1995 E36 coupe for close to 6 months now. So far no problems with the car and no probs with the auto tranny. 102K miles.
Last night I was browsing this board as well as Pelican's, on this supposedly "lifetime" ATF on this car,
I swear, this morning I started the car and put it in "D", next is a big clunk and then for about 3 seconds the engine was revving but the car was not really moving. Thereafter the car is running fine and no more problems.
I suspect that my fluid is low and needs replacing. Reading into this, it seems most people don't recommend replacing the fluid if you dont have problems. But now I will have to do it and follow the procedure at Pelican's site..
Dammit. Sometimes it dangerous reading stuff on this board !! :shifty

Is that the GM 4l30e?
Check out this thread from an Isuzu forum (yeah, same tranny).

heh, I swore years ago I'd never buy another GM car...now I have two cars with the same GM tranny. Oh well, they're actually holding up quite nicely.

not replacing it, but filling it would be okey. My car has over 192K and since day one, I haven't change the tranny fuild. I think before they slap on the "lifetime" sticker, they MUST have done some research. Beside, the lawyers would have a field day, if consumer start complaining of fail transmission

changing out the transmission fluid is part of the Inspection II service I believe, along with the differential fluid - another supposedly "lifetime fluid".
Don't think of your automatic transmission going as a bad thing though - just an excuse to throw in a manual tranny!

Change the fluid and filter. it's not very difficult to do and the DIY section has a great write-up. Mine pooped on me this weekend and new fluid cleared it up nicely.

Where are you looking? My factory "Service Warranty Information 1993" booklet says for Inspection II to "change ATF in automatic transmission at normal operating temperature" and "Change oil in rear axle while at normal operating temperature".
I'm not sure where people are getting this "lifetime fluid" thing - although I wouldn't be surprised if this information was contradicted somewhere else.
