Hey everyone,

I wanted to re-ask a question because I've seen some conflicting information from my forum search.

I'm about to change my manual tranny fluid and would like recommendations for either Mobil1 or Redline. I understand that BMW recommends that we fill our manual trannys with ATF.

I'd like to know which oil would be more likely warm up faster. Basically looking to see what would help the phenomenon where the stick likes to rest under 5th gear rather than under 3rd when it's cold. Seems that after it warms up sufficiently it will rest under 3rd gear like it's supposed to do.

And yes, I'm still wading through that posting regarding this phenomenon, but I'll probably be able to change the oil before I finish that thread.

So what do you recommend? Redline or Mobil1? Does one or the other result in a better shift?

Thanks!

Redline D4 ATF/Manual is supposed to be one of the best in terms of viscoscity especially during winter. And as far as the shifter resting to the right-side, I think it's a problem inherent to some BMW transmissions, that are a few years old, and may not necessarily be related to the temp. Check out post# 9 from this thread:

I use Royal Purple tranny fluid and Royal Purple in my diff no problems so far and I have used Redline for both as well. Can't tell a big difference between the Royal Purple and Redline but my shift knob rest under 3rd for both.

ATf because true gear oil isn't the right viscosity. I just used generic stuff.
