Anyone replaced thier stock muffler with a magnaflow, borla, ultraflow etc keeping the stock piping? What muffler brand and size did you use? Sound and performance?
Stock piping looks pretty good. I would think the weight savings and performance would be similar aftermarket cat-back offerings at a fraction of the cost.

well I used a magnaflow with my exhaust so maybe I can comment....the power gains you will get are about the same being as the muffler is one of the biggest restrictions. The stock cat-back however is heavy so you won't lose all the weight that you could...but for a $80 muffler and whatever you pay to get it welded thats alot better than most aftermarket exhaust in price. The sound is a little loud for my taste but I can live with it.

You can just get a single 3" inlet magnaflow and have a y-pipe made to a single 3" pipe that runs to the muffler from the cats. You cannot just hack off the stock muffler and keep the pipes because there is a bend in the stock muffler. If you just hacked it off and welded a new muffler on, you'd have the tips going out the corner of the bumper.

I had an ultraflow on my last M3 and it sounded fantastic, I would very much recommend the ultraflow over the other brands you mentioned. The ultraflow also got a lot more compliments than my current AC Schnitzer catback.
I sold my last M3 to 'EFU' on these boards, you could probably PM him if you had any questions about it

Run a search on the Edge Motorwerks exhaust. From what I understand it is basically a Magnaflow exhaust with some nice chrome tips welded on. It is also set up for a direct bolt in (hangers, etc).

I don't really like the single inlet with a y-pipe idea, I have a dual in dual out muffler it just took at little custom welding to get it to work...and yes edge uses a magnaflow which I don't want to take away from thier business by saying this cause I think they are great but I did my own since it cost me about $100 less

anyone know the part # for the dynomax ultraflow muffler or the magnaflow muffler mentioned above that will fit our cars? i've been searching, and cant find ones that have dual inlets. also, what size dual inlets do we need to mate up to stock pipes?
