Hey guys, I just got all the stuff to lower my car and I have this question...
I noticed everybody who lowers their car without shocks... It looks nice and low - but when they replace their shocks with brand new ones it increases the ride height a bit. Why is this? Is there any way I can get around it??
Thanks!
One more question - no 1990 e34s came with self leveling, did they?

Pretty sure only M5's. Maybe Tourings but I'm not positive on the wagons.
Regular 5er sedans ...no sls.

If they're replacing with OEM shocks, ride height may become slightly higher due to the strut/shocks being brand new and at full gas charge. The original ones were just getting worn over time, especially with aftermarket springs being used. With aftermarket shocks, ride height should not increase, as most aftermarket shocks are a little shorter than OEM units. It also depends on where the spring perch is on the aftermarket shock.

I don't believe there are any brands to stay away from for E39's...maybe someone can chime in and confirm this or shed more info.
I know for E36's a lot of people were having issues with Bilstein Sports front struts and it's spring perch placement, especially when used with H&R Sports spring sets. Front did not seem to lower enough according to the stated claims
