Guys,

I just got 4 new Toyo Proxes 4's on my '01 540 and they free real sticky, which is cool, but I feel like the car is not as nimble. For example, if I twitch the steering wheel left right left....feels like there is more body roll and slower reaction time compared to my previous OEM Dunlop 2000E's. Then at higher speeds it feels rougher....before with the 2000E's the car would glide smooth, with the Proxes 4's, they feel more tractor like. Its quiter though. Strange???
Also, I notice some minor vibration in the steering wheel. The tires were balances and car 4 wheel aligned...the steering wheel does not shake at all....but you could feel the road more. Doing about 80mph feels not as smooth since it feels like the tire is gripping the heck out of the road. The tread pattern on the Proxes4's are pretty agressive and not very smooth looking as they do have some what of a jaggered block pattern....so I'm not sure if thats the inherent nature of the tire or something is not right.

I have about 100miles on the new tires, and I dont know once broken in they will be a bit smoother. Will it improve?

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

GT_MAN,

First off, I have a set of the Toyo Proxies 4's on my 318ti (highly modified, race suspension etc).

My guess is that the Dunlops were not the performance tires the Toyo's are. I don't have experiance with the SP 2000's but comparison might be that the Dunlops had more "squirm" and the Toyo's have a stiffer sidewall. All I've ever ran on the ti are high performance tires. I got a smoking deal on the new Proxies 4's so I'm trying them. The Proxies 4's are behaving like all the other performance tires I've used. On a side note, I'm really happy with them.

So, while you are compareing the OEM tire (there was a reason BMW chose them) to a "stickier" tire. You are noticing the down falls of a performance tire. You will get better stick and now you are noticing more body roll, road feel and vibrations. I don't consider any of these nessarily bad but they are not what you are used to.

I've only got 800 highway miles and 100 track miles (rain) on them. I don't anticipate them getting any smoother.
