My airbag light comes on sometimes, but not consistently. No accidents or airbag deployments. Has anyone else had this problem?

Had this on my 98 540i - turned out to be the passenger side seat occupency sensor - an apparently common failing on the 5 series.Your best bet is to get it checked out by a qualified technician,as,like many of these problems, you can't second guess what's actually causing it.

It could be an occupant sensor in either front seat (which is a DIY) or the crash sensor in one of the front seat seat belt receptors (the part you plug the seat belt latch into) which is also a DIY job. You could either take it to the dealer and have them diagnose it and then perform the repairs yourself or by an SRS fault code reader from Turner Motorsport or someplace else. Either way, you can do either of those repairs yourself as long as you are comfortable taking the seat out.
