Front Shock Question

I was looking into the wheel wells the other day and noticed that in my front shocks were these red foam ring things. They appear to just be sitting there, surrounding the the metal rod inside the actual spring. They look like small red donuts of some sort. I was wondering if anyone knew what these were, and if this is an indication that some mount or cushion needs to be replaced, or worse - the car is gonna explode!. Any help is appreciated. Thx.
