View Full Version : obd1 3.2 Cam Kit same as obd1 cam kit?

I am having a 3.2 motor swapped into my 95 m3..and am pretty sure that if I were to buy a cam kit for the car I would buy the 3.0 cam kit.

My logic is that the conversion uses the manifold, and dme....the major two differences between the obd1 cam kit and the obd2 cam kit.

I am just making sure that I have this right and that the obd1 cam kit is the kit I want for my 3.2 motor.

The obd1 kit includes the cams, injectors, intake, and chip to make it all work. With the exception of the chip (of course), the hardware is the same. The obd2 kit includes all the other goodies like the m50 manifold etc., but you wont need any of that.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Do you think Turner can provide a special chip to run the obd1 3.2 along with the cam kit? (I would think the software would be a little different than a 3.0 motor with the cam kit)

They have a chip that will work. Have the same setup in my car.

I am not sure, but I believe they offer a chip specifically for that. If not I know Bimmerworld does for sure.

i'm not 100% sure, but I remember reading somewhere the cams are different.

what head are you going to use? yours or the 3.2(s52) head?

The cams are different when stock.

The JC cam kit provides the same 264/256 schrick cams for both the 3.0 and the 3.2 as best as I can tell.

I am going to use a 3.2 head. I will use the m50 intake manifold, but that is part of the swap.

i'm going to search, but I thought it was how the cams fit into the head...

The stock 3.2L cams will only fit in obd2 heads due to their counterweights or somthing like that, while the 3L's will go in anything. The schricks follow the obd1 design.

ahhh! that's what I read a while back... wasn't sure if it was vise-versa, thanks for clearing that up.

when swaping the motors take off the OBD II stuff and replace with OBD I stuff. then buy cams on the side. its cheaper.

Hey Dan,

To make the motor work in the first place you need to take off the obd1 stuff...thats how an obd1 swap works.

I myself am not doing the swap, Chuck Stickley is. Everything from my 3.0 will go to the 3.2 (intake, intake manifold, ecu, etc)

I am going to do cams this summer but I was just thinking about it tonight and realized I didnt want to spend the extra $1k for the obd2 kit. I guess I realized the answer before i posted but I just wanted to be sure.

Hey Richard I was trying to say that Once you have the 3.2L OBD II motor. And you want to swap it to OBD I. Take off the OBD I parts off the 3.0L and replace the parts on the 3.2L with the OBD I parts. Yes how i said it leaves out alot but thats what you would have to do to get to OBDI with out buying any kit. And it can be done. Heres a link. http://homepage.mac.com/aceves/

I maybe wrong but I don't care right now.

Dan,

I am well aware of what it takes to make a car obd1. This 3.2 motor I am getting will be made obd1..just as Aceves site instructs.

To do the swap you have to put your hfm, tb, intake manifold, etc onto the 3.2 motor to make it work with the 3.0 ecu.

After I make the motor totally obd1 I am going to eventually put on a cam kit. My initial question referred more or less to if there would be a difference between the obd1 cam kit and the obd2 cam kit.

After posting I was pretty sure but still curious about the cams working in the s52..as I would be buying the obd1 kit. Then i remember that schrick pretty much makes one cam setup for the m3...

I never said I was going to leave all of the parts on the s52..why resist putting extra power into the motor when possible (m50 manifold)

Hope I am making my case clear here, dan.

Thanks to everyone who posted..you confirmed my beliefs.

software is your only issue.
Thanks, thats what I was pretty sure of.

I guess I will go with Turner software or maybe just order the rest of my mods at the same time and get a custom tune by Stickley.
