It was a California car until about 6 years ago when the owner (he was about the 4th or 5th owner I think) moved to Michigan. I bought it in July 2002. Unknown miles, completely stock except for the stereo, a Weber 32/36 carb, a 2002tii exhaust manifold, blue coil, Pertronix electronic ignition, and 320i wheels. Runs great, but it sometimes seems starved for fuel if it sits for a day or two - just needs some judicious pedal pumping and then starts right up (it seems like the carb bowl drains back into the fuel lines intermittently. I haven't found the culprit yet, but at most this is a slightly annoying problem). There is a small oil leak at the intersection of the upper timing cover and the valve cover. I have new valve cover studs on order and I expect this will solve the problem. There may be a small ATF leak but I can't find it - I think I overfilled the transmission last fall, and I had a small puddle when I took it out of storage this spring. Body is good, almost excellent - there are quite a few little spots of VERY superficial surface rust, but the only area I've been worried about is the driver's side floor, which looks like it's starting to get a hole in it from the outside. The usual trouble spots: shock towers, rockers, spare tire well are all close to perfect. It has the original factory paint and there are probably two dozen little chips in it with a bit of rust in the bottom. The insides of the hood and trunk need a new paint job very soon. It has a sunroof and an automatic tranmission (which is great for a restoration, since you can easily fit a 320i 5-speed in there.) Last fall I put a brand new factory BMW exhaust on it, including a tii exhaust manifold, and have desmogged it almost completely. I redid the rear brakes last fall immediately before storage. I just had the starter rebuilt, which was quite expensive. I recently replaced the timing chain tensioner rail and the tensioner piston and spring. The tires have about 1000 miles on them. It has I think 320i basketweave wheels on it, which aren't quite the right size but the tires only rub slightly at full lock. The interior is very nice. The driver's seat has been reupholstered with OEM BMW fabric identical to what it had when it was new. The passenger and back seats are original but nearly perfect, although the horsehair padding is breaking up. The odometer is stuck at about 30,000 miles. The heater fan doesn't work. It has an inexpensive CD head unit in a custom console (I have the original factory console) and nice Polk speakers mounted in the rear kick panel.

For a car with a 30 year old suspension it handles very, very well. With new bushings, tighter springs, and a few replacement suspension parts it would be simply amazing.

This car deserves to be restored, and it is an excellent candidate. I'm still considering doing that myself, but it hurts me to have a car that I can only drive four months a year. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN IN SNOW.

I'd like US $2800 for it. It is in Marquette, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Any shipping is at your cost, but I will be happy to help arrange it.
