Just wondering how well people think this works.
I started to start replacing all the sensors and switches in my 86 635csi one at a time. Belts have been all replace just last week. My new distributor kit is coming!! So far so good.
I want to know if changing the chips would enhance and provide a better life for my 121k miler.

The USA rules require the manufacuture to error on the side of caution.
The tuners use a much closer standard and you will need to keep the engine in better shape, as far as valves, sparkplugs, wiring, and fuel.
You will be able to feel the difference in day to day driving because the torque range will be lowered, to a more usable RPM.
The fuel economy will suffer at the same percentage as you gain in performance.
Jim Conforti, what I use in my Tow Mule, is known to be on the cutting edge and they advertise:
The 3.5 inline-6 is a torquey car, however, it could be a little more powerful in the upper RPM range. With a TMS Performance Chip power is boosted at all RPM with a huge 29ft-lbs of torque gain at only 2000 RPM. This chip was tuned on the dyno to yield as much performance from this engine as possible and still maintain its strength and durability. Jim Conforti tuned the fuel and spark maps to take advantage of 91 octane gasoline. By making the engine more efficient with this fuel, gains in horsepower and torque are achieved as well as making the engine run smoother.
Note: we will need to know the number of pins on your original chip. It is either 24 or 28 pins. Thanks.
Horsepower Gain
+ 24 @ 5000 RPM
Torque Gain
+ 29 @ 2000 RPM
New Rev Limit
6600 RPM

I was looking at the Bavarian autosport chip.
Chip Part Numbers: For Use On These Applications:
BAV.M30.200A; BAV.M30.200B 535i/is 1985 thru 1987
635csi 1985 thru 1987
735i 1985 thru 1987
This is the same website that you pointed me to fix the OBC light. Which is perfectly working now that you help me with that too. Thank you by the way.
I the Conforti chip better or is is the same as the Bacarian autosport chip. Thanks again for your input.

I would be very surprised if there was a difference between JC and BAS.
JC wrote the code but sells chips for private branded sales.
This was all done over 20 years ago and there has been no improvment from the original code.
I have seen many of the E-Bay clones installed and they also seem to be based on the JC code. If you were going to clone a chip, using the industry standard would seem logical.
I do have a Split Second controller in the glove box on my Tow Mule, so I can tweak the setting if needed.
The controller in the glove box, and it is indexed to allow me to play with settings and get back to smooth running.

I have Dinan chips in my M6, and 635, made a big difference in both, especially the M6. But you HAVE to run 91+, and like K/C said, you have to keep the engine in top shape, plugs, wires etc. or it can get unhappy fast.

Do you think the guys who sell this chips at $45 are basically using a eprom burner and burning copies of the JC and dinan chips? You think its worth a try to buy them?

I wouldnt mess with those, they have been known to contain errors that can make your car run to lean, or are custum burns that would really require racing fuel to run properly.
You can on the other hand get used dinan chips, I got mine for my M6 out of a crashed 88M5. It had all the documentation from dinan, and I even called them to confirm it, they did, and I got a chip for $54.00.

Did you get yours from ebay or similar place? Does most m series chips work on a 635csi?

Yes I got it off Ebay. But no, an M series chip will not work in the 635. You need to find a 535, 635, or 735 chip. As long as it is the 3.5 I-6. The M6, and M6 chips are also interchangeable, due to having the same engine.
