Sooner or later I'm gonna have to get a new exhaust for my 1995 M3. I want something stainless steel, lighter than factory, deeper and louder sounding, and NO DTM tips or Stovepipes! With that being said, what do you recommend and what Don't you recommend! Thanks :buttrock

Stromung. Sound is awesome...not too loud, not too quiet. Fit and construction is awesome. Check out understeer.com for sound clips.
billy boat tri flo
looks awesome( no dtm tips here ), sounds awesome ( people four lanes over hear me on the freeway ), and definetly gives the car an aggressive note. I raced a 99 M3 last night with the same exhaust as mine, and it was just awesome.
in my experience, 95's are usually the loudest when fitted with an aftermarket exhaust, so keep that in mind.

AA Gen III here. Like it all the way. It doesn't sound like discout auto parts mufler, its just right sound for me. Its quite when you drive normally, when you get on it it speaks up.

it's on the louder end of the spectrum but not the loudest.

I have a Dinan, sounds perfect in my opinion. The Stromung is a nice option as well though.

I was thinking about doing a custom job with a universal magnaflow muffler.. how do you guys think that would sound?

Euro version of the Supersprint muffler here. Quiet when I want it to be, damn loud when it gets hot and I open up the throttle. Certainly not the lightest muffler out there, but its build quality and fitment is second to none (and I have had pretty much every other setup out there more or less).

what's the lifespan of the stock muffler? I didn't think it needed to be replaced unless it was damgaed by road salts or wrecked. Which aftermarket exhaust is closet to stock?

Dinan also.
Just had it opened, and the rattling baffled welded (they all do that eventually)
Too damn expensive, but looks great, and sounds great.
My next choice would be the UUC TSE, but it's a bit too loud for most.

I will have to say i absolutly love my AA gen III ive herd alot i like stromung also. I also like the look of the AA call me crazy but i like the boxy shape i think it goes along with the e36 body design. And it sounds verry mean at WOT.

AA gen 3 sounds the best i think.
AA Gen III - Awesome fit and finish, power gains similar to others, lightweight but I don't believe as light as the Rogue. I've heard awesome things of the Stromung as well and it looks cool with the mesh tips. You can't go wrong with any listed above and power gains are very similar. Look for the bargain.

Stromung or Eisenmann. Anything else is either too quiet (close to stock) for the $ or will annoy the hell out of you at some key rpm.

I currently have B&B triflo + track pipe. It sounds incredible. It is a little on the loud side for some, I personally love it since I don't drive it every day anyways.
I had stromung on my other 95, it has a great tone to it. Without the track pipe, I prefer the stromung. I never had a chance to hear both with track pipe, so I cannot compare.

SS is nice and quiet, it is a little louder at WOT, nothing like OMGHI2U! esq My Intake is louder.
I had a UUC System U and when I was in the mood it sounded like sex, otherwise it kinda hurt my ears. The little "pop pop" noise it did while engine braking was badass though.
Maybe down the road I will be trading my SS exahust. I agree about its worksmanship though, its probably the best out there.

Yah, I would like to here a review on EDGE myself. But why would you go with the quiet version when the loud version gives you more HP and even more torque? I say get the most you can for the money you're spending.

I was wondering who was gonna take poto's bait from among us supersprinters... :D
The previous owner of my car installed a B&B TriFlow. It's a bit on the loud
side - especially at certain RPMs (a high gear climbing a hill) or WOT.
It's definitely louder than a Remus system, which I had on my previous car.
My cousin, driving his Z28 Camaro ahead of me up a mountain road in VT,
told me I have one loud exhaust. Apparently he could hear my exhaust note
from behind him over his own V8 exhaust note.
The sound of the B&B reminds me of the English sport cars of the late 60s and early 70s.

Got my Stromung 2 weeks ago, still braking it in. Fit and finish are awesome. Got it on th GB recently from Chris at Understeer. Great communication and fast shipping once it was built to order. Thanks Chris! Sound at startup and idle is nice, just loud enough to let you know its there and really comes alive at WOT. I would buy it again!

Got my Stromung earlier this year from Chris at www.understeer.com It's everything that f4im3 is saying. Great sound, look, tone, volume, etc. It came down between the AA Gen 3 and the Stromung. The Stromung had a slightly deeper tone and was available with staggered tips.

ive been in this forum for a couple months now since about march i think and i do findit very funny when the same questions are asked but in different ways. has anyone else ever noticed that. cause i know when i first got here i asked the same questions as well. until learned how to use the "ever-so-complicated search"
anyways. stromung is nice heard some of them around. i heard a dinan a couple times i like that but not the price. just make sure you get a good sounding one...cause in my experience if you put the wrong exhaust on a bmw it'll sound worse than any ricer fart can.

HKS Klasse is what I have. Those who attempt to race me tell me that the exhaust note at high speed is phenominal. I've had it for 2 years on my e36 M3.

I have a similar experience with my B & B. I was cruising on the freeway and made a pass at a car. A few seconds later a Mustang ( a Mach 1 I believe) flies up next to me and says my exhaust sounded awesome. It definetly made my day.

anyways, my point about the SS was...it's one of the most expensive, it's one of the heaviest, and it's one of the most stock-sounding.

Just playing but in all seriousness, sometimes being heard or having an aftermarket part isnt worth it if it doesnt fit like oe.

I've had the SS and I use the RE, both fit great without issue - no melted body parts etc.
As for the SS sound - I like it but it just wasn't aggressive enough for me. the fact that it was 45+/- wasn't helping it either.

I have supersprint header, custom track pipe w/dynomax resonators and a B&B Tri-Flo (w/baffles). I LOVE the sound and many of the corner workers that watch me autox seem to think so as well because I hear their positive feedback all the time.
My first exhaust was an AA. To be honest I was a bit disappointed with this exhaust. Some people like the way the can looks under the car... I for one just didn't like it. Just looks odd under the car to me but this is personal opinion. Another thing is it's just too quiet for me. I put an exhaust on there so I could hear the damn thing and the AA just didn't do it. It sounds stock up to around 4k and then if you're WOT it comes to life with a ferrarish type sound (I prefer a deeper throater sound). Problem is I like to hear my exhaust all the time and don't want to wait for 4k+ rpms for it to come to life. I found myself flooring the car all the time just to hear it. After the tips started to split on my 1st gen I had to send it back for a 2nd gen and AA did a good job of swapping it out for me however I really disliked the 2nd gen AA tips and the sound didn't change (still too quiet for me). Overall the fit and finish was very nice however the sound left me wanting more and the odd shape Star Wars looking can under the car didn't do much for me but in the end I guess I didn't mind it THAT much. Personally I'd rather have a round can.
Supersprint imo is in the same boat. Overpriced imo and sounds even closer to stock than the AA. What's the point? I mean besides lighter weight.. I might be missing something there.
UUC's first gen exhaust is loud. Reminds me of a Tri-Flo.. it starts off deep but as the rpm's rise it seems the loudness drops off compared to the Tri-Flo but still sounds good imo.
Stromung seems to get favorable input from the enthusiasts but I don't know a whole lot about them. I've heard one on a 325i and thought it sounded pretty decent. Fit looked to be pretty good and the tips looked ok as well. I believe they were around 3" dual round tips which are similar to a Tri-Flo and maybe that's why I like :)
I ended up exchanging my AA with a Tri-Flo and the difference in sound was night and day, but I did have some issues. My Tri-Flo was obviously a loud version (don't think they differentiate this anymore) but I say obviously because it could drown out modded LS1's and gave me headaches from the resonance. I ended up getting some baffles from B&B and had them spot welded in and it did a great job of cleaning up the raspiness and resonance (I believe they come this way already if you order from BMP??). I then added Supersprint headers and custom track pipe with dual dynomax resonators and it now sounds amazing now. Not tooo loud, but when I want it to scream it REALLY SCREAMS. My buddy the other night said as I took off that my exhaust sounded like it was screaming F*** YOU!!!!!!!!! It sounds mean and there is no question I like the intimidation factor that comes with it.
In the end.. it's a personal choice as to what you'll like. What sounds good to me may not sound good to you and vice versa. If you have any m3's in town with exhausts see if you can get some rides and then decide. Personally I wouldn't get an AA or SS because they're too quiet. I would go with either a Tri-Flo, UUC or Stromung, but if stealthy is what you want, then go with an AA or SS.

I just got aa gen 3 exhaust and think it is awesome. I was deciding between AA, RE, and dinan exhaust. My friend has dinan and I heard that the rogue has droaning problems. The dinan is sick but I wanted something that was a little louder but not too loud. The AA exaust is a perfect balance. It also helps that it adds the most power and torque in the low rpms than the other ones where you are most likely to use it. It is all personal preference on the sound you like so if you want a louder exhaust than stock which does not get annoying AA is a good one. Oh yeah not to mention its stealthy looks. One tip I have is to get new hangers because they are usually cracked and the exhaust will rattle if htey are.
i'm ordering a stromung soon if that matters

I'll add my 2c worth to the lot. Me and frayed(moderator) used to hang out when I was in TX. He changed exhausts like underwear so here's my thoughts.
AA: Quiet, just a lil louder than my ol Remus. Sounded nice at WOT but I don't like the can.
Rogue: drone like crazy 2500 rpm, frayed returned it with in a week.
Dinan: sounds really nice but I can't justify the price tag!
Remus: nice build quality but may be one of the most quiet exhaust, why I sold it.
SS: really nice deep bassy sound. I would get this exhaust if I didn't have my current Stromung.
Hiop: actually one of my favorite exhaust, really nice bassy tone at low rpm. Screams at WOT, don't care for the tips though.
Stromung: light, good build quality, nice tone at WOT but NO droning on freeway. You can get a good deal on GB too.
But I would recommend you attend one of the local track days...should be quite a few guys with aftermarket exhausts for you to listen to. Remember, it may sounded nice and loud at first, but may get tiresome later...so keep that in mind.
i will never get tired of my B & B. It just screams agressiveness and totally fits the M3's persona IMHO.

It has a nice blurby sounds down low, is not too loud with normal driving, and have a nice note WOT. I've received many compliments about it while autocrossing. People will come up and ask what exhaust it is because it sounds great and then are surprised that it is an HKS.

I just put a Dinan on last month and really like it. It isn't terribly loud when idling but it does pop and burble when you bring down the revs. WOT is sick....especially under overpasses and in parking garages. :eek
However, the day I put it on, I ran into a Ferrari 360 Spider in Buckhead and his exhaust note made the Dinan (or any other M3 exhaust system available) sound like it was worth $50..... :(

IMO....Dinan looks and sounds the best. Just about all aftermarket exhaust doesn't get much gain at all....i haven't seen any solid dyno's to back up the cost of aftermarket exhaust for our cars. BMW did a very good in the exhaust design.

anyone who buys a cat-back exhaust for a 96+ for the power increase is fooling themselves. 10 hp max, and that's overly generous. It's all just ear candy.
Now the 95 had a fairly restrictive muffler, so an aftermarket might yield some better gains.

hey aceves where in CO are you, id love to hear a Rouge system, Ive got an AAGen3 on right now and after 6 months of my UUC TSE it seems as quite as stock with the AA, but before i choose what im keeping id like to hear some more options
Here's a sound clip of my Rogue exhaust:

UUC System U v2. Nice low end grunt, not too loud. Highway driving is a bit tedious after a while with a standing wave @ 3800rpm (80 MPH in 5th). Otherwise I really like it - plus it's loud enough to set off some car alarms :D

My car is under MAJOR reconstruction right now, major as in no engine and no body :eek , So can't really here it.
Actually I also have the AA exhaust on the car now and will consider selling the rouge.
I'm littleton near south west plaza.

I'm sure my car's feeling a little :nuts icky right now, with the used underwear analogy... I haven't washed her since I had Frayed's used Supersrint installed :toiletman
What else is fraido selling off his car. Might have to give him a call. He sure got lot sa goodies in it. BTW...since the birth of his baby...the SS hasn't seen much driving...so the underwear is clean :)

Do you have a pic of this exhaust? and would you say it is louder or softer than the GenIII?
I would say that its softer...I'll post a pic sometime tomorrow of the exhaust.

Hey Tony,
b/c I change cars like underwear (in addition to exhausts), I made the mistake of buying a porsche, selling some of my BMW parts, then sold the porsche, now driving the M3 again. I mistakenly sold off my SS. So, now I need another exhaust.
I've had:
SS
AA
Rogue
HIOP
stock
I was thinking of the Remus or going back to the SS. I think the Remus is lighter and has a smaller can so it shouldn't bump into my rear shock bolt like the SS did.
Did you think the Remus was quieter or louder than the SS?
ps, staying dry?
Cheers
themadhatter

Jeff - the SS will stay quieter then the remus. the packing in the remus has a tendancy to harden quicker and this results in a louder exhaust.
-Ron
*edit - this is from personal experience. I used to sell both products and kept an SS exhaust for myself, I felt that it was the better of the two.

Jeff....
I think we have similar taste in exhaust so here's my take. I would definitely go with the Stromung. If you have the windows up, which is most of the time in TX...you won't notice it at all. Plus, it's lighter than any other exhaust out there. I have my over 2 years and the tips still looks great. Sounds pretty wicked at WOT..
I think the SS is louder than my old Remus at idle, about the same db at WOT but it's heavy as hell..
Get the Stromung!!! :)
Staying dry and comfy :D

The Stromung's just a bit louder than the AA, but has no drone whatsoever. It's really a great sounding exhaust :)

I have the Remus 3.5" tips, all black with stainless steel tips. Looks sick and sounds good. I have no backseats, so I can hear that muther f'er pretty good. At WOT it sounds great! I'm also having my cats taken off next week, so it should sound beastly thereafter! :buttrock

I used to have the Eisenmann Race Version, and it was a GREAT exhaust system, especially past 4000 RPM's, but I just wanted something different.
Now, I have the Rogue Engineering exhaust. It's definitely louder than most other exhuast systems I've heard. It drones around 2000 RPM's, but it sounds so damn good. I don't mind the droning, and I love loud exhausts. I wish it was louder though.

I think I'm leaning towards that, if the feed back on it is good, or making a custom setup with a magnaflow.

Get the Schroth setup. The CG (which I also have) is fine, but not a substitute for the harness setup IMHO.
Yeah, stoptech. There multiple great vendors. I'll let you know what I think. I'm most interested in buying from someone with the best knowledge base and after-sale support rather than price. I'm going full 4 wheel kit, though it's likely overkill. But WTF, it's christmas time, eh?

I have AA GEN III and loved it, but wanted something a little more aggressive: I traded for a UUC system U and that thing is on the money with a low aggressive grown....although when I first drove it home, the drone at 80 was aweful, but the exhaust got better over time.

do eet!! ;)
a friend of mine has one on his M3 and as soon as i picked up my car, i ordered one, the sound is great....barely noticeable at idle but at WOT in the upper revs, it just sings....and its a very nice piece of work, it was almost a shame to have to beat on it with a bfh at the track :devillook (the tire was rubbing slightly on the rear muffler)
its a bit loud in my car with no interior, cams, track pipe, and stromung (its a track only car), but its great with a helmet on and actually not loud at all compared to the LOUD track/race cars....

i've had:
system U - Nice and LOUD :redspot bad fit :(
TSE - Nice and moderately loud :D bad fit :(
TSE w/ AA crack pipe - REAL NICE and VERY LOUD :alright bad fit :(
Supersprint w/ AA crack pipe - Nice and mellow with a slight edge at upper rpm :) Perfect fit :)
Supersprint w/ AA crack pipe and Hiop headers (and cam kit) (present set-up) :D perfect fit :)
I love a loud exhaust, but only about 10% of the time. I do not want to announce to the world every time I punch it. Nor do i want headaches after every drive over 30 min.
My present set-up is about perfect for me. It sounds very racy, yet very refined and only moderately loud, with a lot of character. Sounds like a high-dollar high output european racing motor in a street application.
Sometimes I wish it were louder with more attitude, though . . . may switch to Superspring RACE (which should be lighter, too).

if your gonna put an exhaust on a german car you gotta have a german made exhaust: Eisennman

I got my borla for $300 and am very happy with it (nicer than most other exhausts out there), but if i had the $800 i would have gon with Eisennman w/trackpipes for a 95 (since thats what i have).

A memorable drive was through the backroads at WOT whipping around turns and the exhaust just sending passionate rumbles throughout the hills echoing back....To my surprise a deputy was about a 1/4 mile in front of me after I came around the last turn, and as soon as he saw my head lights he slammed on the brakes. :embarrasm
