View Full Version : high performance engine replacement
1: relatively new here. I'm looking at replacing my alusil failing engine with the high perf engine from http://www.bavengine.com. The cost is about 6K with reported 15-20% increase in HP. Anyone out there who's bought one of these? They come with iron cylinder sleeves and 5 year warranty, claimed 310-320 hp. My local shop quoted me about 1500 to do the swap, although it doesn't sound too hard to DIY.
2: They also offer a 5 speed conversion kit for about $1500, sound ALOT cheaper than other 6 speed conversions i've heard about. Any thoughts?

I'm also curious about that. My car has a lot of mileage now and I'm sure someday I'll have to rebuild/replace the engine. It's good to know if there is a reliable source to get a better engine.
But to get a new engine certainly costs more than rebuildling the engine, right? So have you considered instead of spendging 8k to get a same new engine, why not spend a couple thousand more and rebuild the engine, and get the asa supercharger? :p
I'm saving up so someday if my engine fails, I can build it stronger and put on the asa stage II (if it's finally released here).

btw ausil was the good engine, nikasil was the bad one :devillook
IMHO, you prob wont gain power from a new engine (just will bring it up to around stock. 6000$ for a 10hp gain is not justified (if the only reason you are doing it for is performance). i think it would just be a better idea to rebuild your CURRENT engine with forged internals, and toss a supercharger on there :evil2
edit: ^ i would normally say toss a turbo on there, but that being a v8 would have to be one hell of a turbo manifold. :eyecrazy
how 'bout the second question of 5 speed vs. 6. Also, any idea on the cost of a new block and new internals and supercharger? I've already been quoted as much as 1500 just to redo the heads if i buy a new short block from BMW :help .

wait... do you want to convert to 6 speed or convert 6 speed to 5 speed?
I'm talking about converting from auto to either 5 or 6 speed. The bavengine co. says they can get everything, tranny, pedals, hydraulics, driveshaft for about $1500 (5 speed). I have been looking for a source for 6 speed trannys without much luck.
