Hey guys,
I got a problem with the steering lock of my '95 520i: Turning the key back from ignition position 2 to position 1, the steering lock already engages.
I know these locks are prone to failure because of numerous reasons. Since I can release the lock just fine, I assume the shaft connecting the tumbler and the ignition switch is not broken.
While I'm trying to understand the science of the locking mechanism, I'm wondering which part failed in my case.
Is it the shaft that due to wear and tear lets the spring loaded mechanism pop up too early?
Is it the bracket that's broken on one or both ends preventing the mechanism to fully retract? (see below pic I stole from another thread)
Or maybe it's the upper steering column with a worn out notch?

I'm asking before I take everything apart. Maybe there's someone who experienced the same issue and got some advice?
Cheers!
