2001 E52 - Z8 - how to deactivate the US sidemarkers - amber corner lights

Hello All,

I am using NCS Expert, NCS Dummy and INPA re-code a US Z8 to have the car homologated in France.
Thanks to the help of Abel 328, I was successful to code the tail lights (break lights and rear turn signals). Now they functions as they should in France (break lights not blinking when turn signals activated, or turn signals not illuminated when breaking).
Again, thank you Abel.

I am writing this new post because I am getting crazy about the front sidemarkers : the amber turn signals that are automatically On in USA when the light switch is on position 1 or 2. In France, these amber lights (turn signals) MUST BE OFF unless when blinking if you activated your turn signal or the warning lights).

In NCS Expert, I have coded my LCM_III module as below :
* BLK_V_GED_ALS_SIDEMARK as nicht_aktiv (Front Turn Signals Dimmed used as Sidemarkers)
* BLK_V_GED_ALS_PARKLICHT as nicht_aktiv (Dimmed Front Turn Signals As Parking Light
* KALTUEBERWACHUNG_BLK_VO set as nicht_aktiv (Cold Monitoring of Front Turn Signals)
* BLK_V_GEDIMMT_ALS_ERSATZ set as nicht_aktiv ((Front Turn Signals Replacement lights)
* U_GEDIMM_BLK_V set with values Wert_01 and wert_02 and wert_03
* BLK_DIMMUNGS_OPT_1 and 2 set as nicht_aktiv

BUT THE AMBER LIGHTS / SIDEMARKERS ARE STILL ON (when I have the ignition ON and the lights switch in Position 1 or 2).

To disabled these sidemarkers, does any one know if I need to change some of these settings (in the LCM) or if there are other functions in other modules ?
Is it a combination of activating dimming but with a voltage equal to 0 ?

If needed, I can post my entire TRC file of the LCM.

I am lost and really need your help !

Thank you very much !

Posting the .TRC would be good. You might also try VO coding the LCM with a euro spec VO, this might cause conflicts with other US specific lighting equipment though.

Hello Samsam15,
and thank you for your help !
here is the TRC file of the LCM of my car.
I was able to get a TRC file from a EU Z8, and there was only one difference in the LCM code compared to mine (i.e. the fuel cap alarm). But on the EU car, the front turn signals are OFF when the light switch is in Position 1 or 2, and are only blinking when you activate the trun signal.
So I do not understand why my front amber standing light are always ON if I put the light switch in position 1 (standing lights On) or 2 (low beams On)
A quick note, on these 2001 cars, BMW used the ZCS code instead of the FA/VO that appeared later.

Here is the TRC :

I was looking at the diagrams and I think it might actually be a wiring difference, it seems that US cars had the parking light wired to the corner lights. There are 4 pins on the front turn signal, pin 1, ground, pin 2, turn signal, pin 3, parking light/running light, pin 4, diagnostic signal, on the us spec car the pins that would be used for the parking lights are wired instead to the side marker lights in the rear bumper and pin 3 of the front turn signal. I think if you disconnect connectors X245/X246 you will turn off the rear side markers and the continuous turn signal, if you disconnect connector X6500 you will turn off the continuous turn signal. I have attached the diagrams and connector locations.

Thank you very much Samsam15 !
This is impressive !
I can see the photo with the connectors location attached but the other 4 attachments (732897, 732896,732898, 732899) dont seem to be valid. Can you please post them in a different way (screen copy, etc..)
Can you please let me know where you found this info and diagrams ?
If I understand well :
1. disconnecting both X245 and X246 connectors will de-activate rear side markers and front continuous turn signal (without disabling the turn signal function) ?
2. disconnecting X6500 connector will only de-activate the front continuous turn signal (without disabling the turn signal function) ?

So if I only want to de-activate the continuous amber front continuous turn signal, I do not need to disconnect X245 and X246 ?

Best,

Samsam15

Here's the diagrams. Your interpretation is consistent with the diagrams, if you only want to disable the front continuous turn signal disconnecting X6500 will do that (this should have no effect on the normal operation of the turn signals). I got them from BMW's WDS (Wiring Diagram System), there are various ways to access it, the first one that shows up on google has the Z8 though I have not used it and don't know how good it is, a working install of ISTA will also give you the same access. If you want any diagram in particular I can get it for you.

Hope X6500 fixes your problem, if it does be sure to update the thread.

Hello Samsam15,
i will try to find these connectors on my car tomorrow. My potential problem is : how to recognize the X6500 connector in the center console ? Is there a way to identify it ? Same thing for X245 and X246 : do you know where to find them below the glove box ? Do I have to dismantle something under the glove box ? And then, how do I recognize the X245 and X246 in the wiring harness Terminal 58 ? I guess nothing is labelled like this in the car... If you have more detailed information/photos on how to find the right connectors, I will really appreciate !
Thank you very much for your help !

Samsam15
04-09-2025, 03:36 PM
The best way to identify connectors is by wire colors, BMW uses abbreviations for the colors in german, so you can look at the diagrams and know what color wires you are looking for.

I was just taking another look, it seems like X6500 is next to the angular rate sensor under the center console forward of the shifter boot, it might be tucked under the carpet there.

Hello Samsam,
Thank you again for! I am kind of struck trying to remove the center console.
I am able to access under the gear shifter and hand-brake , but that is how far I can go.
There might be screws or tabs under the console and I am afraid to force /break the732946732946 console.

I don’t know how to remove the silver/grey cover in order to access what is below. And the whole center console is also tricky to remove). Any ideas?

JCGuilbaud
04-10-2025, 06:52 AM
Samsam,
So it seems that the X6500 est beneath the center console. Do you lknow how to do do it, or have access to a document detailing how to remove the center console or at least the silver-grey cover of the console (circled in Blue on the photo)?
If yes, that would be awesome ! Is there a “mechanic/maintenance/repair manual” for this car that you could get ?
Thank you very much

Thank you very much !! How do do get all these information ? I dream to have all this ?

- - - Updated - - -

I tried to remove / pull / slide the trim shown in second photo, but it is really stuck. I dont feel any clip that could be unclipped... I am afraid to pull it strongly ...

Samsam15
04-10-2025, 03:55 PM
It probably uses clips that go in these 4 holes (not where the arrows are pointing, the T shaped ones), I have found that clips can get quite suck so using a bit more force is sometimes necessary.

JCGuilbaud
04-10-2025, 04:13 PM
wow.
How can we understand the T shape of these 4 inserts ? How should I move the pîece to make it go out ? It is so tight on the outer edges (with the leather of the center console that I don see how I can move each side towards the outside).
Do you think that it would mean using more force pulling up this piece, without risking breaking the tabs / attachments ?
I am very happy to correspond with you and benefit from your knowledge, but if you fell ok with sharing with the documentation your are using, it would be fantastic.
If not possible, Please share with me all photos infos you have related to my issue.
If you can share the full documentation, i am all for it by email or Dropbox, etc.. I guess you can find my email when you click on my name.
Thanks again !

I have never worked on a Z8 but all the guys on the Z8 forum say you just need to pull on it as does the service info, I don't think there is a trick to it.

JCGuilbaud
04-10-2025, 04:58 PM
but how do you get all these wonderful photos and infos ? You must have a documentation / database to get these docs ?
Are you speaking about the z8 usa forum, or other ones ?

so are you "just" a Bimmer passionate or a BMW professional, with all respect possible from my side ?

Samsam15

This is all from the BMW TIS, I am an amateur though I do sometimes fix other peoples cars, but that is not my profession. I think it was someone on the Z8 us forum who talked about pulling it.

JCGuilbaud

Dear SamSam15,
I followed all the instructions that you gave me...and it WORKED !
I dont know how to thank you enough, but without you I would have never guessed that there was a special connector on the US Spec Z8 hidden somewhere inside the center console among dozens of wires !
I spent so much time trying the ZCS coding to fix these front amber lights, but you just made it happen !
Thank you gain.
I cannot recommend you enough to all the guys here in the BimmerForum !
Have a wonderful day.
