Hi all, i have an E36 convertible (318) and the Check control module is having issues. Currently my brake lights in my taillights don't work , the taillight in the bootlid does work.
There is an E36 in a wreckers yard near me with a CCM , the car in the wreckers is a 320i sedan. Does anyone know if the CCM's interchangeable/plug and play or do they need to be coded to the car or specific model

Thanks so much for any help.
Cheers

How are you thinking that the CCM and the brake lights not working are related?

Brake light failure in the E36 is pretty common, and is typically the failure of the brake light switch mounted above the brake pedal. If it fails, the CCM will warn of a brake circuit failure. But the CCM doesn't CAUSE the brake light failure.

I had the brake failure warning on the CCM of my E36 M3. Replacing the brake light switch solved the problem.

My brake lights in the taillight units wont work, but the highlevel brake light in the boot lid does work. I have checked for continuity in the 4 pin brake switch, but also just to be sure i have replaced the brakelight switch. To rule out an issue with the actual tail light unit I have run a wire direct from the bootlid brake light to the grey/purple wire on the tail lights and then all brake lights work. Until i turn on the lights and then the brakes do not work. This leads me to think the check control module is the issue mate

Not sure if the bad trunk wiring is an issue with the ti compact but I would look at that next, expose all the wiring looms in the back and inspect them.

The brake light switch mounted to the pedal makes a message, and bulb trouble will make another message. Which message are you having?

The CCM does not have to be coded. It's also not likely to be the problem.

Take the tail lamp housings out and observe the connectors, look for charred pins. Check the tracings where the bulb holders make contact, check the holders too.

My X5 had a pit in the trace where the bulb holder was supposed to touch. I filled the pit with solder 10-ish years ago, still going strong.

The E46 had trouble with the ground wire being burned. The E36 has trouble with the wire harness from the fender that goes to the trunk lid, there are many different problems that result.
