I recent got a 93, 525i and have been trying to get it running every day use.
I took my car to Midas to get my o2 sensor replaced. I had a check engine code that kept coming up and when it would the car would run in limp mode. But now and then it would go away and run fine, and then back. It was running decent. The stomp test gave me a 1221, which I found was an 02 error. Did everything for that, changed the maf, intake leaks found, etc. Then I dropped it off at a midas to do the sensor change, and they told me they reset the check engine as well. The moment I get into my car, I see I got a "trans program+" code, which I never saw before, and now my gear indicator on the dash won't display after a second or 2(it will display E-P while on on, engine off, then after a second goes blank). I tried driving it but it's not only very hesitant now, but it's shaking more than I remember it doing. Feels like limp mode, but worst.
Before this it was shifting fine and driving fine in regards to the transmission. Any ideas where I can start to address this issue? Automatic transmission

Update: after driving it a bit I realized it wasn't driving in 1st gear at all, when I'd shift it to 2nd (manually) it wouldn't shift at all, but it would into 3, and 4. Also, after driving for a couple blocks, my check engine light came on. Giving me a code 1222.
So I'll be back on the oxygen issue. But now where did this trans code come from?
Could it have resulted from them resetting something?

The transmission control module monitors all the transmission electrics. If it sees a fault, it displays Trans Program in the cluster and turns the mode and gear lights out. It also cuts off power to the valve body but is designed to still give you third gear and reverse just to get you home. The TCM does a self test as soon as you switch on the ignition. In your case, it is failing that test straight away. The fastest way to find out what fault is stored in the TCM is to read the fault codes. You will need a code reader to do that but you can do a number of tests using a multimeter. Meanwhile, it may be worth speaking to the garage concerned. Link to wiring diagrams is here:

Just checked, my Transmission fluid is good. Got an estimate for running a diagnostic test from the dealer (haven't found any shops who can scan it) and they told me $250 to check it. Is it worth just going to the dealer?? I saw ecs tuning sells an obd1 compatible for this model for 150,
But I'm not sure if it's as in depth as whatever scan they do at the dealership.

Thank you for the support Chaser!
Quick question, given what you mentioned, if the TCM is failing straight away without even turning the engine, could it still be a mechanical issue? Or is it more likely to be an electrical issue.

The TCM is not failing. It has run a test on the trans electrics and found something wrong. When it does that, it stores a fault code in the TCM. Read the code and you know which direction to look. But your car works on a system called ADS, not OBD, so you need diagnostic equipment which will read that. Before you spend a lot of cash, maybe consider doing simple resistance checks with a multimeter at the TCM plug? You have a late model so the TCM should be in the e-box. The TCM pin numbers will be stamped in the socket and the resistances are below. To avoid causing an arc when you remove the TCM plug, remove the battery negative before you do so. Maybe start off by checking that the fuses powering the TCM have not blown and that the battery is showing 12.6 volts.

Update, I took it to a shop that said they'd scan it for free. They called and told me I had to rebuild the whole trans or swap it for a used one. 3800 rebuild, 2800swap plus tax. I can't tell if he's just trying to upsell me. What are the chances I actually need a whole new transmission? It was doing fine prior to the incident with the shop where the code came up. It was shift fine, and the fluid was still topped off and clean when I checked it.

was that a BMW specialized shop? I would try to find another shop to reconfirm what the other shop says. I have my doubts. Find a shop which has a proper tester/code reader and no generic tester. If you are checking codes with a generic OBD reader, don't expect much - OBD codes are emissions codes, not diagnostic codes. You need a code reader which reads BMW codes.
