View Full Version : 1989 bmw 535i cooling

I have a 1989 bmw 535i installed new thermostate,waterpump,both temperture sensors....bought a temperture gun the car will get about 185 degrees ( which I believe is good) ...the car is not overheating but the temperture guage on dash will eventually get in the red... I want to fix that but out of ideas..would appreciate the help

Pull out your instrument cluster and check all the connections on the back.
I had a loose plug on mine and the temp gauge was acting up like that.

Yes, you have to remove the steering wheel. I've seen people force the gauge cluster out without pulling the steering wheel but that usually ends up gouging the plastic lens badly.

It took me three different black sensors, and springing for a genuine version, to get my temp gauge to read any where near correctly. The first two aftermarket sensors I tried showed it in the red within a minute of starting the car from cold. If you're smarter than me, and didn't throw the ones you took out away, you might try putting the original sensor back in to see if it may be a faulty sensor prior to risking your gauge cluster.

I have had similar experience. I’m not sure if it was a faulty aftermarket part, or maybe I just bought the wrong one, but it could have led me down a rabbit hole. Before you chase your tail verify you have the right sensor and it is functioning correctly.
